REPORTS TO: High School Principal

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt/10 month

GENERAL SUMMARY: Tapestry Charter School, a K-12 Expeditionary Learning School located in Buffalo, NY is looking for a New York State certified English teacher to join their high school English Department, and the Tapestry High School community in the rigorousness, inspiring and fundamentally important work of creating a relationship-focused school community in which our kids can learn, thrive, and lead.

Specifically, English teachers at Tapestry support this mission by :

  • Exposing them to a rich array of meaningful, diverse, and engaging texts.

  • Engaging them to make sense of the world and building connections beyond themselves.

  • Guiding students in grappling with challenging and meaningful questions related to themselves and to the larger community.

  • Use standards to create powerful inquiry-based units that challenge and engage them in meaningful and authentic work.

  • Developing strong writers capable of defending their position, sharing their experience, and expressing what they believe in.

    Under the direction of the high school Principal, this position is responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing an appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. The classroom teacher is critical in supporting the mission and values of Tapestry to educate and inspire a diverse community of learners by engaging them in rigorous real-world learning experiences which prioritize intellectual, social and emotional growth.

INSTRUCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create inquiry-based units and projects that engage students in meaningful work.

  • Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning and literacy strategies.

  • Support and differentiate instruction to meet the needs, levels, and abilities of all students.

  • Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students and use information to adjust teaching strategies.

  • Establish and communicate clear learning targets for all learning activities.

  • Observe and evaluate student's performance and development.

  • Assign and grade class work, homework, tests and assignments.

  • Co-design and participate in grade level Expeditions by building engaging case studies with real world applications.

CREW LEADERS RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Build meaningful and trusting relationships with crew members.

  • Establish relationships and lines of communication with parents and families. ● Implement, and at times design, lessons for crew.

  • Support crew students' academic, social, and emotional growth.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Build strong and meaningful relationships with students in order to create a safe and nurturing classroom environment.

  • Encourage parent and community involvement, obtain information for parents when requested, promptly return phone calls and answer emails.

  • Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing routines, procedures, and expectations and holding students to rules and expectations.

  • Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students of diverse cultural, social, and economic backgrounds.

  • Commitment to the success of all children.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Consider oneself a life-long learner, always willing to seek to improve, share, grow and evolve.

  • Continually stay abreast of best practices with the field and the profession.

  • Maintain an open-classroom approach to learning, including observing peers, inviting peer observers into the classroom, and sharing practices to improve instruction.

  • Participate in regular appropriate professional development activities throughout the school year.

  • Become acquainted with, and then further develop an understanding and use of Expeditionary Learning practices and pedagogy.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of, and support, Tapestry Charter School mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior.

  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree required, Master's degree preferred.

  • NYS certification in ELA or related area of study preferred.

*Salary based on a Teacher Payscale- Bachelors, Masters, Bachelors + Certification, Masters +Certification plus years of experience.
