Position: Holmes Elementary School Principal (Certificated)

Qualifications: Hold a valid New York State Administrative Certification

Demonstrates understanding of NYS Regulations and Guidelines

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Elementary School Principal is a full-time administrator who provides leadership with supervision, instruction and the general administration of a comprehensive and equitable elementary program, maximizing the physical and social/emotional well-being of all students and staff in alignment with the District mission and strategic plan.

Reports To: Executive Director of Elementary Education

Salary: As per KAA Contract

Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Provide effective instructional leadership for his/her building and manage those activities which contribute to the effectiveness of the total educational program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Hold a valid and appropriate New York State administrative certificate

  • Ten years teaching/and or administrative experience preferred

  • Broad knowledge of the principles and practices of school administration and of current educational trends in curriculum and instruction; comprehensive knowledge of the methods, materials, procedures, and practices of the specialties assigned to the office

  • Knowledge and successful experience at the elementary school level

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and school community

  • Ability to manage fiscal, physical, and human resources to successfully carry out the function and programs of the office

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, community members, staff and administrators

  • Knowledge of literacy skills and strategies including reading, writing, listening and speaking.

  • Ability to be flexible, detail-oriented and able to prioritize and deal with ambiguity, and work well under pressure

  • Knowledge of Response to Intervention and differentiated instruction

  • Knowledge of the NYS Learning Standards.

  • Ability to read, write and interpret documents such as curriculum guides, budgets, assessment data, labor contracts, grant applications, statutes and policies

  • Ability to understand and generate written memorandums, employee evaluations, and correspondence with business and public contacts

  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence

  • Ability to multi-task and work effectively as a team member

REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Elementary Education

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES:

Curriculum and Instruction:

  • Establishes and promotes high standards and expectations for all students and staff for achieving academic excellence.

  • Assumes the primary responsibility, in collaboration with the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Leadership and Instruction and the Executive Director of Elementary Education, of the implementation of professional development necessary to foster best practices in curriculum and instruction.

  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing equity in education, including reducing achievement gaps, ensuring equitable access to resources and opportunities, and addressing systemic barriers that impact marginalized students.

  • Keeps abreast of research findings, theories and practices related to the teaching and learning process.

  • Provides for the regular assessment of all instructional programs and communicates program needs to the Executive Director of Elementary Education.

  • Assists in the development of elementary curricula and assures implementation of all high-quality research-based instructional programs.

  • Consistently evaluates and monitors data for the purpose of appraising academic performance and using such data to develop instructional goals and actions.

  • Leads school-based planning processes to ensure the development, implementation, and evaluation of all school programs and activities related to the District's strategic plan.

  • Facilitates professional development through comprehensive planning and conducts these during faculty meetings, school-based team meetings or other applicable opportunities.

  • Assumes responsibility for identifying the teaching assignment of all certificated staff.

  • Coordinate the development of the master schedule that provides all students a comprehensive education.

  • Facilitates conversations that support successful transitions from grade to grade.

  • Collaborates with the Executive Director of Special Education to ensure student programming is matched to needs.

  • Skill in using data to identify inequities, monitor progress towards equity goals, and inform decision-making related to instructional practices, resource allocation, and school policies.

  • Works as a team with District and building administrators in areas related to curriculum, instruction, staff development, testing and assessment, scoring, and training.

  • Strong knowledge of social-emotional learning theory and practices, including the ability to create a supportive school climate, implement evidence-based SEL programs, and support the social and emotional well-being of both students and staff.

Instructional Technological Fluency:

  • Selects, uses, and coaches others in the use of effective technological tools to strengthen school results and student achievement.

  • Embraces technology-rich instructional practices in the classroom.

  • Leverages technology platforms to inform planning and decision-making in support of school goals and promote efficiency in operations of the school.

  • Models use of technology to enhance engagement, leveraging technology to promote consistent and clear communication with staff, parents/family, and community members.

  • Knows and understands district, state and federal guidance regarding intentional, safe and equitable use of technology for both students and staff.

Students & Community:

  • Establishes a school culture where all students feel valued, represented, and encouraged to support their well-being and continuous academic growth.

  • Ability to foster a sense of belonging and community among students, families, and staff from diverse backgrounds. This includes creating inclusive policies and practices, facilitating meaningful dialogue around diversity and inclusion, and celebrating cultural differences.

  • Maintains good order in the school and classrooms by setting up and administering standards of student behavior which permit a positive climate for teaching and learning.

  • Embraces restorative practices and instructional practices that promote a respectful, restorative and resilient school environment.

  • A deep understanding of diversity issues, including race, ethnicity, culture, socio-economic status, language proficiency, and other dimensions of diversity. Experience implementing strategies to promote equity and inclusivity within a school community.

  • Develops, implements, and oversees philosophies and procedures to uphold the District's Code of Conduct. Advises and supports individual students.

  • Assures the presence of effective programs and procedures to meet the social-emotional, academic, physical and behavioral needs of students.

  • Establishes, fosters, and sustains a culture of academic success and social-emotional development through partnerships with students, staff, families, and the community

  • Creates and sustains a warm, welcoming, and inclusive environment for students, families, and staff.

  • Creates and implements a vision that exhibits a deep belief in the potential of all students.

  • Engages families and the community in support of each child's learning and the school's learning goals.

Health and Safety:

  • Establishes and implements student health and safety procedures.

  • Establishes a program to monitor and implement best practices to ensure regular student attendance and accurate attendance reporting.

  • Represents the school at certain conferences and meetings related to school administration.

  • Supervises health and safety in the building by working with the staff in organizing safety regulations, reporting serious accidents, making periodic inspections, and organizing and supervising appropriate drills.

  • Works with the cafeteria manager and head custodian to see that health standards are met and that work is performed efficiently.

Effective Communication:

  • Regularly attends public meetings and school sponsored activities.

  • Effective communication and collaboration skills to work with teachers, staff, students, families, and community stakeholders to promote a shared vision of excellence and responsiveness.

  • Interprets the school program to the community. Provides for the dissemination of appropriate written information to the public.

  • Partner with parents/guardians to support them with the educational, personal, social, and emotional growth of their children.

  • Maintains effective communication with local and state educational and service organizations.

  • Serves as administrative liaison to the parent association.

Personnel & Talent Retention:

  • Assumes the primary responsibility for the supervision and evaluation of staff members.

  • Supervises the office staff in maintaining sound office procedures and keeping and reporting accurate and adequate records for employees and students.

  • Works in conjunction with other leadership staff to recruit, evaluate and hire an exemplary diverse faculty and staff.

  • Counsels with teachers to assist in solving instructional problems and provides for exchange of views and ideas within the staff by creating a collaborative atmosphere for solving school problems.

  • Implements a professional development program that relates to both building and District-wide instructional goals and promotes continuous improvement with staff members.

  • Confers as necessary with any member of the school staff concerning individual problems and, when appropriate, involves all responsible parties in the resolution of personnel issues.

  • Plans an orientation program to acquaint staff new to the school with building policies, procedures and programs.

Evaluation:

  • Assumes the primary responsibility for the supervision and evaluation of staff members and programs.

Budget:

  • Works in collaboration with the Assistant Superintendent of Finance to develop an annual budget proposal.

  • Supervises all budget components as assigned to ensure that expenditures are consistent with approved funding resources and practices.

  • Provides systematic procedures for the business affairs of the school including: processing requisitions, inventorying school property, scheduling field trips and other transportation requirements, and coordinating the scheduling of evening and weekend activities in the building.

Professional Growth:

  • Participates in activities, which will lead to continued professional growth, including attendance at conferences, seminars and workshops.

Other Duties:

  • Assist in the implementation of District policies, regulations and procedures.

  • Other duties may be required.
