BluePearl Licensed Veterinary Technician - Surgery in Brooklyn, New York

BluePearl Pet Hospital is hiring an exceptional Veterinary Technician to join our Surgery Team at our Brooklyn, NY location.

This position is eligible for qualified candidates to receive up to a $7,500 sign-on bonus.

BluePearl is looking for an energetic, determined, knowledge-seeking Veterinary Technician for our Surgery service. Our hospital provides a first of its kind skills observation and verification system allowing for a structured pathway for levelling and career advancement. We provide bi-annual levelling with options for promotions, career advancement with the potential of compensation increases as an added bonus! Through in-hospital training, CE, and knowledge sharing between Veterinarians and Technicians alike, you can keep your mind active and continue to build your knowledge and career pathway.

Pay: $26.50 - $51.00 / hour

This pay band is a starting point and is dependent on experience and advancement through CareerTrax leveling system.* Candidates with VTS credentialing are eligible for compensation commensurate with experience*

We also offer competitive shift differential pay for eligible hours worked for nights and weekends.

*Shift differentials are based on a 4-hour minimum.

For example:

  • Mon – Fri: 6pm to 8am = $4.50 Shift Differential

  • Sat & Sun: 6pm to 8am = $6.00 Shift Differential

  • Sat & Sun: 8am to 6pm = $4.50 Shift Differential

A BluePearl Surgery Technician is responsible for some post-operative client communication and must be able to work independently while contributing to a larger team goal. A minimum of two or more years of experience in a veterinary hospital is preferred but not required. A rotating on-call schedule is required once training has been completed.

As a Surgery Veterinary Technician, you will:

  • Perform physical exam; accurately count heart, pulse rate, capillary refill time, mucous membranes, temperature, respiratory rate, and effort.

  • Understand normal vital and lab parameters and alert the doctor when abnormal.

  • Perform phlebotomy.

  • Place peripheral intravenous catheter in cephalic vein.

  • Proficient in medical math.

  • Check medication calculations and dosages.

  • Set up appropriate materials for intravenous fluids and administer subcutaneous fluids.

  • Properly shave and wrap for an IV catheter for medication infusion and surgery site preparation.

  • Admit Surgery patients and obtain thorough patient histories, including current medications and dosages, response to treatment, side effects, intensity, and duration.

  • Provide nursing care to stable patients according to hospital standards of care and core values.

  • Discharge Surgery patients from the hospital, including basic client education such as how to handle patients after discharge, how to administer oral medication at home, reviewing medication side effects and providing post-operative instructions.

  • Maintain a solid grasp of common veterinary medical terms and abbreviations and can communicate with other veterinary professionals in medical terms.

  • Address client concerns and answer them appropriately during visits, updates, or after hospitalization while maintaining bedside manner is a must. Quickly and competently facilitates incoming calls.

  • Understand diagnostic workup protocols (including surgery-specific terminology for each procedure per each hospital’s protocol).

  • Possess a working knowledge of anesthesia/monitoringequipment and assist with patients assigned ASA I or II classifications. Can operate all brands of intravenous fluid pumps and can troubleshoot errors.

  • Remain current on R.E.C.O.V.E.R CPR guidelines and demonstrate proficiency in designated role as assigned by attending clinician and/or supervisor.

  • Maintain hospital for day-to-day function and operation (stocking, cleaning, etc.).

Our Continuing Education Plan includes $500/year reimbursement for LVT and $750/year for VTS. The Continuing Education allowance can roll over up to $1,500 for CVT and VTS associates. Non-Credentialed, full-time Paraprofessionals are eligible for an annual CE stipend of $150. Full-time LVT associates also receive 8 hours of CE paid hours each year. Full-time VTS associates receive 12 hours of CE paid each year. Paid CE hours can be carried over year to year up to a maximum of 24 hours. Newly hired associates will receive a pro-rated amount of any CE benefit for which they are eligible.
