Overview

The Senior Engineer will lead in the design, development and implementation of various microprocessor relay upgrade projects. A dedicated professional with continuous oversight responsibility is essential to continued reliable operations. The Sr Engineer will travel to field locations to assist personnel in resolving issues during system outages or open auto investigations.Operating under the broad guidance of the Protective System and Testing Section Manager, the Senior Engineer will actively engage in and take charge of evaluating novel microprocessor-based relay upgrades through practical testing. Beyond testing, comprehension of NERC CIP Cyber Security Standards is imperative, as this knowledge is essential for utilizing passwords and configuration change management tools. Throughout the commissioning of new relay systems, the Senior Engineer will assure adherence to NERC CIP password mandates and configurations.Proficiency in various computer applications is a must, such as MS Office, Drawing Database Systems, Doble Protection Suite and Protective relay software. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential for effective collaboration and project execution.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • The Senior Engineer shall assume a leadership role in devising, crafting, and executing various projects aimed at enhancing microprocessor relays. Their role is integral to ensuring the consistent functionality of these systems, demanding vigilant oversight. This professional will embark on travel to field sites, aiding in troubleshooting during system disruptions and investigations into automated processes.
  • Under the general supervision of the Protective System and Testing Section Manager, the Senior Engineer will be active in and be responsible for bench testing on new microprocessor-based relay upgrades. In addition to testing, an understanding of the NERC CIP Cyber Security Standards will be required since passwords, and configuration change management tool need to be utilized. The Senior Engineer will ensure NERC CIP password requirements & configurations are met during commissioning of new relay systems.
  • The Senior Engineer will lead training initiatives and contribute to the professional development of both Engineers and Associate Engineers.
  • Develop operational and maintenance test instructions for relays.
  • Lead and develop written evaluation of system disturbances and coordination with Engineering and submit Engineering Service Request.
  • Develop test plans for microprocessor relays.
  • Provide necessary training for relay technicians.
  • Acts as technical liaison between Central Engineering and various groups Cyber Security Training Program and aspects of Personnel Risk Assessment Program.
  • Develop capital project justification.
  • Evaluate maintenance practices and develop more efficient and reliable methods.
  • Review and comment on Engineering design concept for relays and relay upgrades.
  • Acting as a liaison, the Senior Engineer will interact with designated units and departments within O&R and CECONY, as well as with service providers and contractors, to establish sustainable alignment with NERC CIP requirements. When called for, they will deliver presentations, including at the executive level. Furthermore, this role encompasses various additional duties and assignments as required.
  • The Senior Engineer will scrutinize and provide insights on Engineering design concepts concerning relays and relay upgrades. Their engagement in the industry will encompass liaising with organizations such as EPRI, NATF, and others, focusing on the application of relays. They will cultivate a deep understanding of CIP 002, CIP 007, and CIP 010, and ensure the compliance of microprocessor relays with these standards.
  • Make presentations as required
  • Perform other related tasks and assignments as required.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and with a minimum of 8 years relative work experience in either relay protection or substation system testing or
  • Master's Degree in Engineering with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and with a minimum of 6 years relative work experience in either relay protection or substation system testing
Preferred Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and with a minimum of 8 years relative work experience In either relay protection or substation system testing
  • Master's Degree in Engineering with a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering and with a minimum of 6 years relative work experience In either relay protection or substation system testing
Relevant Work Experience
  • Requires work experience in any of the following areas: Power System, Relay Protection, Microprocessor based relays. Required
  • Proficient expertise in IEC 61850 protection schemes. Required
  • Must demonstrate the ability to learn and apply new topics. Required
  • Must have strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and VISIO Required
  • Must be able to deliver exemplary customer service and develop a team spirited work environment in support of Con Edisons corporate values and mission. Required
  • Must possess superior oral and written communication skills, champion change and have the ability to influence others in order to improve the management process. Required
  • Must be well organized, detailed oriented, flexible to handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines. Required
  • Must be able to exercise independent judgment and possess the ability to render sound business decisions. Required
  • Knowledge on Protection Suite and/or various relay software. Required
  • Acute knowledge with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) CIP Standards. Preferred
Licenses And Certfications
  • Driver's License Required
Physical Demands
  • Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
  • Use hand-eye coordination to adjust controls on equipment
Additional Physical Demands
  • Must be able to respond to Company emergencies by performing a System Emergency Assignment to restore service to our customers.
  • May require local and out-of-town travel and representation of the Company at information exchange meetings including EPRI and NATF.
  • Must be willing and available to be on call, work off shifts, weekends, holidays and overtime as operating and system conditions require.
  • Must be able and willing to travel within Company service territory, as needed.
