New York Edge Double Dutch Specialist in Bronx, New York

SUMMARY

Double Dutch Specialists provide targeted skill and age-appropriate instruction, coaching, and mentorship to youth in New York Edge’s after-school programs. Double Dutch Specialists utilize the Sports and Physical Activity Resource Guide to create engaging and rewarding activities encouraging participation in New York Edge programs. At the site level, Double Dutch Specialists are responsible for developing lessons, projects, and objectives that meet the individual students’ needs. Foster an atmosphere of fun and learning and serve as a role model to youth, always conducting him/herself in the utmost professional manner and maintaining appropriate boundaries.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • 9-15 hours per week.

  • Monday through Friday -- 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Ensure daily activity lesson plans and projects are structured and age-appropriate and have clear learning goals based on the Double Dutch and physical activity guide provided.

  • Communicate with the Program Director and Center for Double Dutch and Wellness regarding the calendar of programs, leagues, tournaments, and special events.

  • Motivate and provide students with the opportunity to participate in organization-wide Double Dutch activities.

  • Establish and enforce safety rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible.

  • Instruct participants on the activities' principles, techniques, and safety procedures and show how to use materials and equipment properly.

  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.

  • Evaluate activities to determine if they are producing the desired results.

  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' needs and interests.

  • Promote and ensure the progressive development of student skills and character development in all youth.

  • Most New York Edge Double Dutch Specialists are expected to provide support during Academic hours.

  • Adapt each activity to ensure safe participation in the space provided.

    REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Must be knowledgeable and skilled in Double Dutch and have prior experience successfully teaching and instructing youth

  • Prior experience teaching and instructing youth preferred

  • Must be able to follow a curriculum

  • Must be responsible, reliable, and punctual!

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required.

  • May be required to walk up and down stairs.

  • May have to lift or move objects/materials as needed.

  • Work is performed mostly within a New York City Public School but may be required to interact with the community at-large during trips or events.

    QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required; some college preferred

  • A minimum of one year of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is required.

  • A minimum of one year of teaching experience is required.

  • Must have passion for New York Edge's mission and demonstrated interest in education and youth development.

  • Candidates qualified to lead instruction in more than one activity are also preferred.

    The Double Dutch Specialist will be required to report to the school building and interact with staff, students, parents, and school administration.

    At the time of offer and acceptance, the job requires safety and security clearances through the Department of Education and Department of Health.
