SUMMARY

New York Edge is looking for a Community School Culture and Climate Associate to assist with establishing a highly visible presence within the school building by supporting the Community School Director in assuming a vital leadership role and holistic approach toward improving academic performance. Solid and collaborative partnerships will drive these efforts among principals, parents, teachers, and CBO’s throughout the school year. The Community Schools Culture and Climate Associate will assist in the overall implementation of the Community Schools program under the supervision of the Community School Director, including but not limited to: organizing special events, participating in school team meetings, communicating with students, parents, and school stakeholders, identifying resources, building relationships in the community and designing programs to increase attendance, mental health, expanded learning and parent and family engagement.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Uses de-escalating intervention strategies and restorative practices to respond to crises.

  • Participates in professional learning opportunities, including; restorative justice, equity and inclusion.

  • Coordinates with principal and dean to implement restorative justice practices strategies.

  • Works closely with the school culture teams to expand restorative practices to ensure that all stakeholders feel welcome, needed and heard in our school community.

  • Provide empowerment tools so that students can become leaders within the school community.

  • Assist in students’ educational and social development under the direction and guidance of the facilitator and classroom teachers.

  • Provide support for individual students inside and outside the classroom.

  • Expected to assist with the recruitment of students

  • In conjunction with the community school staff and stakeholders, assesses student progress and communicates such to teachers and school administrators.

  • Attend professional development offered by New York Edge and the Department of Education faculty.

  • Identify students’ needs, coordinate with school teams to target interventions, and track and monitor impact of interventions to share with the school base team.

  • Support students with emotional or behavior concerns and assist them in developing appropriate social skills.

  • Promotes positive character development in all youth.

  • Participate in school governance, community school team meetings, and specialized meetings such as attendance meetings.

  • Facilitate and support activities and workshops to support the improvement of the school culture.

  • Helps to develop an annual calendar of culture events/activities.

  • Work with the data team to ensure effective data monitoring and continuous improvement.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with program staff and school partners Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills with proven ability to interact with a diverse range of individuals both in person and over the phone, applying tact and discretion as situations demand

  • Must have excellent organizational, time management and follow-up skills

  • Must be able to clearly articulate outcome requirements and provide the necessary and appropriate resources and support for community school team

  • Responsible and professional conduct that serves as role model to staff and youth

  • Exhibits strong character traits and exercises patience and creativity while seeking win-win scenarios

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Google Docs, and Word

    QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution

  • Two years of experience working in an urban school or youth development setting

  • Effective communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills

  • Strong literacy skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues when necessary

  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion

  • Ability to develop trusting relationships with students, families and staff.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older

    WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • May be required to walk up and down stairs

  • May be required to lift heavy objects/materials as needed

  • Work is performed mostly within a New York City Public School, but may be required to interact with the community at large during trips or events.

    The CS Culture & Climate Associate will be required to report to the school building and interact with staff, students, parents and school administration.

    At time of offer and acceptance, the job requires safety and security clearances through the Department of Education and Department of Health.
