SUMMARY

New York Edge is seeking a passionate, knowledgeable, and mission-oriented individual to fill the role of College and Career Specialist in our High School Youth: Educational Support program area. As a College and Career Readiness Specialist, your primary objective is to empower students to explore and plan for their post-secondary education and career pathways. You will work closely with students to develop the skills, knowledge, and resources needed to make informed decisions about their academic pursuits and future careers. By providing guidance, support, and encouragement, you will help students navigate the transition from high school to higher education or the workforce with confidence and readiness.

Job Type: Part Time, Year-Round

Hourly Rate : $25-30 per hour

Schedule : Monday - Friday, 12PM-6PM

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Individualized Student Coaching:

  • Conduct personalized coaching sessions with students to assess their interests, strengths, and goals related to college and career readiness.

  • Assist students in identifying potential career paths, exploring academic majors, and setting achievable goals for their future.

  • Provide ongoing support and guidance to help students overcome obstacles and develop essential skills for success in college and career settings.

  • College and Career Exploration:

  • Facilitate workshops, seminars, and career fairs to expose students to a wide range of post-secondary education and career opportunities.

  • Coordinate guest speakers and industry professionals to share insights and experiences related to different career fields and educational pathways.

  • Utilize online resources, career assessment tools, and informational interviews to help students research and explore potential college majors and career options.

  • College Application Support:

  • Guide students through the college application process, including researching colleges, preparing application materials, and meeting deadlines.

  • Assist students in writing personal statements, essays, and resumes that effectively highlight their strengths and aspirations.

  • Provide resources and support for completing financial aid forms, such as the FAFSA, and exploring scholarship opportunities to make higher education more accessible.

  • Career Development and Skill Building:

  • Offer workshops and training sessions on essential skills for college and career success, such as resume writing, interviewing techniques, and professional etiquette.

  • Facilitate experiential learning opportunities, internships, and job shadowing experiences to help students gain real-world insights and hands-on experience in their chosen fields.

  • Foster partnerships with local businesses, organizations, and alumni networks to create mentorship and internship opportunities for students.

  • Collaboration and Outreach:

  • Collaborate with school counselors, teachers, and administrators to integrate college and career readiness initiatives into the after school curriculum and extracurricular activities.

  • Engage with parents and families to provide information and resources on supporting their children's college and career aspirations.

  • Establish partnerships with community organizations, colleges, and employers to expand resources and opportunities for students beyond the school setting.

    Required skills:

  • Passion for New York Edge mission and youth development

  • Previous experience working with high school students in mentoring, counseling, or educational settings.

  • Knowledge of college admissions processes, career exploration tools, and workforce development initiatives.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with program staff and school partners

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to motivate and inspire students to set and achieve ambitious goals.

  • Cultural competency and the ability to support students from diverse backgrounds and experiences.

    Work Environment:

  • May be required to walk up and down stairs

  • May have to life materials/objects as needed

  • Work is performed mostly in a New York City Public School, but may be required to interact with community at-large during trips and events

    Qualifications:

  • Minimum of Associates degree preferred with preference in Education, Psychology, or Social Work.

  • Prior work experience in urban education, including experience presenting workshops to students and teachers.

  • Prior experience working with high schools in the college admission, financial aid and scholarship process.

  • Spanish fluency a plus

  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older

    At time of offer and acceptance, the job requires safety and security clearances through the Department of Education and Department of Health.
