Recreation Programmer

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

The purpose of this position is to plan, coordinate, and manage programs, activities, and special events to include the supervision of staff and instructors, promotion of activities and programs, development of curricula and performance of corresponding administrative activities.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops, implements, schedules, manages and promotes recreational programs and activities.
  • Develops curriculum for programs and trains instructors.
  • Registers and assists, and may transport program participants.
  • Develops and administers budgets, maintains financial records and approves expenditures.
  • Performs administrative tasks, including processing payroll, maintaining program records, hiring staff, and coordinating volunteers.
  • Answers questions from the public and the media, makes presentations to groups and prepares press releases.
  • Develops analysis and needs criteria; applies for available grants.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree in Recreation or Park Management, Public Administration or a related field with two years of recreation programming and progressive management experience within a local government preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, direct, and motivate the work of professional and administrative staff.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in the use of computers, Microsoft Office features, and other basic software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to analyze and categorize data and information in order to determine the relationship of the data with reference to criteria/standards.
  • Ability to compare, count, differentiate, measure and/or sort data and information. Ability to assemble, copy, record, and transcribe data. Ability to classify, compute and tabulate data. ? Ability to persuade, convince, sell and train others, including the ability to act in a lead capacity.
  • Ability to advise and interpret on how to apply policies, procedures and standards to specific situations.
  • Ability to utilize advisory data and information such as financial statements, technical operating manuals, procedures, guidelines, non-routine correspondence and laws.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City and State officials, private sector executives and business representatives, and the general public.
  • Excellent work history and attendance record.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
