As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as a Trades Apprentice or Mechanic 1-3 depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s). The maximum salary for the Mechanic 3 is $3,649.00. Trade Apprentice: $16.06 hourly valid Louisiana Class “D” Chauffeur’s License is required

Mechanic 1 $17.18 hourly valid Louisiana Driver’s License is required

Mechanic 2 $19.67 hourly valid Louisiana Driver’s License is required

Mechanic 3 $21.05 hourly valid Louisiana Driver’s License is required

Examples of work:[

30% Diagnose, overhaul and repair all automotive systems including: (electrical, computer, electronic, brake, fuel injection, a/c cooling, heating, etc.) by applying knowledge of how these systems function for automobiles, trucks, street sweepers, aerial bucket trucks, lawn care equipment, and other mechanical equipment which have gas and diesel engines. Performs final tune-ups. Also measures fuel tank and oil drum levels for inventory purposes.

25% Locates and traces defects and causes of malfunctions through audible and visual inspections, utilizes a wide range of test equipment such as engine analyzers, dynamometers, exhaust analyzers, vacuum testers, ignition timers, dwell meters, test stands, exhaust analyzers, oscilloscope, compression gauges, special feeder and dial gauges in order to determine the nature and extent of repairs required. Reviews all technical manuals, in book or computerized form, to perform jobs in a timely manner. Insures that all safety procedures are enforced.

20% Disassemble and rebuilds components and assemblies by fitting and installing needed parts such as pistons, rings, hearings and gears. Rebuilds front end. Aligns meshes and connects repaired units to related mechanisms (engine and related clutch, transmission mechanism, etc.). Uses grinding and seating equipment, clutch pilot, gear pulling tools and common hand tools.

20% Provides instruction and assistance to less experienced mechanics when they encounter issues during repair of work. Prepares paperwork for daily work reports, parts orders, inspection forms etc. Responsible for the cleanup of the mechanic shop and work area.

5% May be required to perform additional duties including, but not limited to emergency/disaster support activities.

Trades: Cabinetmaker, Carpenter, Cement Finisher, Electrician, Instrument Technician, Insulator, Locksmith, Machinist, Mechanic, Painter, Pile driver, Plasterer, Plumber, Refrigeration and HVAC Mechanics, Rigger, Roofer, Sign Painter, Operating Engineers, Sheet Metalworker, Pipefitter/Steamfitter, Upholsterer, General Mechanical Maintenance jobs and Welder.

To assist a journeyman level tradesman and to learn the trade by on-the-job training or formal instruction as prescribed by the employing agency.

Close from a journeyman level tradesman or assigned instructor.

Job Distinctions:

Differs from other entry or basic maintenance jobs by the performance of work directly subordinate to skilled tradesmen with the goal of preparing the incumbent for journeyman level status.

Differs from the journeyman level because it does not independently perform journeyman work in any trade.

Assists a journeyman level Trades Job in its assigned duties.

Performs limited skilled tasks under close direction of a journeyman in an on the job training program.

Participates in training as prescribed by an assigned journeyman or agency policy.
