We are seeking a dedicated NDEC Ecologist, Project Manager (NDEC Ecologist 4) to oversee and lead a team of professionals in delivering high-quality services and solutions to our clients. The primary goal of this role is to ensure operational excellence, team success, and client satisfaction within the NDEC practice area.

Job Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • The successful candidate will assume management of a staff of ecologists based in four offices engaged in conducting wetland and natural resources projects primarily in the Midwest but throughout the US.

  • This person will manage a growing backlog of current work and will oversee efforts to sell new work and enter new markets.

  • The successful candidate will be a recognized leader in natural resources consulting, able to manage an existing practice and expand into new fields and areas.

  • The person who takes this position will continue to diligently serve a list of existing clients and expand that list.

  • The position will involve growing the staff with appropriate, targeted hires as the business grows.

  • The successful candidate will work to keep the regional ecological staff, and other managers across the country, informed regarding potential changes in regulations and policies at the federal, state, regional and local level.

  • This position will require an ability to summarize proposed changes, determine the potential effects on the firm's and practice's business, and disseminate this information internally and externally.

  • The successful candidate will be required to keep abreast of technical changes in the field, and prepare staff to work with new techniques, equipment and procedures.

  • This position requires the manager to be responsible for the financial performance of the practice.

  • To develop budgets that will meet Atlas' performance goals while providing value for our clients.

  • The practice group leader will work to assign work, develop monthly invoices, and oversee payments.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree in botany, plant biology, wildlife biology, or related natural resource field is required.

  • 10-15 years’ experience related to botanical surveys, threatened and endangered species surveys; wetland delineation; native vegetation identification and restoration, design, and management; invasive species control; and wildlife habitat restoration.

  • A demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneaously. To oversee financial progress and reporting for projects.

  • Ability to shepherd the careers of a diverse staff of ecologists and other environmental professionals. A demonstrated ability to interview and hire staff, perform periodic performance reviews, provide training and professional guidance.

  • An ability to present work concisely to clients.

  • An ability to develop presentations and papers aimed at showcasing the practice's work.

  • A valid driver’s license and ability to pass MVR is required.

  • The position will require travel, including overnight and out of state work.

  • Applicants must meet requirements for employment in the U.S.

  • Certification as a Professional Wetland Scientist, Professional Ecologist, Certified Wildlife Biologist or Certified Arborist is a plus.

Technical Requirements:

  • Proficiency in identifying plant species.

  • Familiarity with natural resource regulations.

  • Experience with GPS technology, ArcGIS and electronic field data collection is a plus.

  • Experience in preparing Section 404 permits of all types, and state wetland and stream permits in the Midwest and East.

  • Experience with wetland and stream assessments such as the ORAM, HGM, QHEI and the Rapid Bioassessment Procedure.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, technical writing skills, and attention to detail.

  • Experience in developing NEPA documents of all types.

  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and changing priorities without missing deadlines or losing sight of overall project goals.

  • Ability to travel throughout the Midwest region with potential for travel throughout the U.S.

  • Ability to lift heavy objects, traverse rough terrain, and experience in working in inclement weather with exposure to sun and insects.

  • Ability to work independently with little direct supervision; self-motivated with sound professional judgement.

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage marketing efforts for natural resources project.

Other Miscellaneous Qualities:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the NEPA process and completion of Environmental Assessments and similar documents.

  • Experience with ODOT or other state DOT's procedures for environmental assessments.

  • Experience with stormwater permitting.

  • Experience with field surveys for linear projects such as pipeline, transmission line, or renewable energy projects.

  • Previous experience with environmental consulting and project, budget, staff and client management.

  • Licenses to collect/handle listed species is a plus.
