BAE Systems Space & Mission Systems (SMS) builds highly capable spacecrafts for executing challenging science missions. However, as a mission prime, there are programs where the best value solution for our customers is procuring buses from the rapidly growing, lower cost, commercial bus market.

As a Bus Procurement Engineer, you will be the primary technical interface between the program or proposal effort and the bus subcontractor. The ideal candidate will have both strong project engineering skills and breadth of end-to-end spacecraft development expertise.

The Bus Procurement Engineer will work closely with the program technical and leadership team to procure a bus that meets program requirements and schedule.

The Engineering, Science and Analysis (ESA) Strategic Capabilities Unit comprises the technical talent and organizational leadership that enables the successful delivery of high-impact discriminating technologies for our customers missions. What You ll Do:

  • As the Bus Procurement Engineer you will work alongside the SV Architects assigned to a mission area. You are the primary technical representative to the SV Architect (i.e., Civil Space, National Space, or Military Space) providing purchased Bus solutions to external customers and partners.

  • Work closely with BAE Systems-SMS mission and payload engineering in early pursuit phases to guide system architecture and payload design trades consistent with bus market capabilities.

  • Work closely with BAE Systems-SMS integrated supply chain and Enterprise Assurance in procuring the Bus.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with low-cost commercial bus providers, understanding available bus supplier capabilities that enable future programs.

  • Perform competitive analysis on the bus market.

  • Lead bus procurement RFPs and selection in support of BAE Systems-SMS proposals.

  • Accountable for technical deliverables and ensuring they meet the needs of the program and requirements of the subcontract.

  • Support the Space Vehicle Engineering team through development, test, and delivery of the integrated space vehicle. You will work closely with the Space Vehicle Lead and Chief Engineer who is responsible to ensure the company delivers a system that meets our customers technical performance specifications and mission needs.

  • Support customer engagement on current and past programs via the programmatic route, understanding customer requirements as well as institutional imperatives, expectations for improvements/lessons learned.

  • Additional job expectations:

  • Develop a positive and collaborative relationship with the portfolio Advanced Systems Managers and other internal team members - meeting their needs in a timely manner.

  • Become an integral part of the of the capture team providing strategy and specific opportunities.

  • Participate in BAE Systems-SMS capabilities being maintained in support of mission needs as well as changes in technology/supplier base.

  • Lead provision of technical details of current and past programs to build standard resources that the New Business team can use to discuss procured Spacecraft Bus capabilities.

  • Author RFI/RFP sections and participate as a member of RFI/RFP red team or review teams for other mission areas.

  • Assist and be part of the New Business team to deliver presentations, RFIs responses and proposals by providing descriptions of capabilities, assessments of risks (cost, schedule, technical) and recommendations for proposed solutions at the SV level with focus on heritage and future capability plans to influence requirements or mission concepts in advance of the RFx steps.

  • Collaborate in a dynamic environment with multiple groups, interfaces, and all Spacecraft subsystem teams.

  • Participate in IRADs and other department initiatives, as required.

  • Provide feedback to execution programs within the portfolio for design milestones, anomaly resolution, and gate reviews.

  • Support programs/studies (in some cases, taking a lead role).

  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.

  • Perform other duties as necessary.

On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site five days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between company campuses and other possible non-company locations may be required.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment.

  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.

  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills

  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 12 or more years related experience.

  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.

  • Excellent communication skills as well as a willingness to collaborate cross functionally.

  • Ability to self-start and operate in an environment of ambiguity when necessary.

  • Demonstrated experience in proposals, systems engineering processes, including requirements development, requirement allocation, change management, verification, and validation a self-starter that will own this activity.

  • Experience over the full program life cycle, from conception to delivery/operations.

  • Demonstrated experience leading multi-disciplinary teams including meeting cost, schedule, and performance goals.

  • Customer Relationships: Knowledge of missions and customers across core technologies areas.

  • Excellent presentation skills with experience presenting to senior decision makers and technical audiences.

A security clearance or access with Polygraph is not required to be eligible for this position. However, the applicant must be willing and eligible for submission, depending on program requirements, after an offer is accepted and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance/access.

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills

  • A current, active TS/SCI clearance.

  • Working knowledge of Earned Value Management (EVM) - CAM experience.

  • Model-Based Systems Engineering expertise.

Pay Information

Full-Time Salary Range: $154000 - $194500

Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
