Job Summary
GSI is seeking an Environmental Scientist II or III to support a variety of environmental projects throughout the western United States. This role includes detailed and routine environmental assignments in geology, biology, ecology, chemistry, and regulatory issues. The ideal candidate will collaborate with senior staff to develop environmental work plans and reports. Responsibilities include working as part of a team to perform environmental fieldwork, such as sampling groundwater, soil, soil vapor, sediment, surface water, and other environmental media, and overseeing subcontractors during investigations and remediation. Office duties include data analysis, report preparation, and technical documentation.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide technical assistance on various projects under the supervision of senior personnel.
Perform environmental sampling
Collect, evaluate, compile, and analyze project-specific data.
Prepare sections of reports, ensuring accuracy and quality.
Review work products for consistency with SOPs, guidance, and regulations.
Act as a field supervisor, coordinating field tasks and managing junior staff and subcontractors.
Can serve as a site safety and health officer.
Prepare requests for quotes from subcontractors and vendors.
Review work products of junior staff.
Perform technical editing and word processing duties.
Contribute to report writing and proposals.
Minimum Qualifications, Skills, and Educational Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field (e.g., engineering, physical/chemical/biological science, environmental science/engineering, geology/hydrogeology).
Familiarity with CERCLA and RCRA.
At least 5 years of experience managing and executing environmental tasks for investigations under CERCLA, RCRA, or UST programs.
Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.
Valid driver’s license.
Ability to access government properties following a background check.
Working knowledge of Geographic Information Systems.
Database experience, including Access.
40-hour HAZWOPER certification and current 8-hour refresher course.
Desirable Skills and Experience
Site Safety and Health Officer qualification.
Minimum of 5 years of continuous safety experience.
Experience with Federal Department of Defense (DoD) projects and supporting USACE, Army, Air Force, or NAVFAC.
Certifications: OSHA 30-hour Construction, 40-hour EM385, AHERA and HI Asbestos inspector, HI Lead Inspector, First Aid/CPR.
Physical Demands
Outdoor fieldwork, potentially walking over uneven terrain for up to 8 hours a day.
Regularly required to be at site locations, sit, stand, walk, use both hands, reach and raise items above the head, use fingers to feel and handle, talk, and hear.
Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, lift weight, and carry heavy equipment.
Subject to “fit for duty” baseline physical and medical monitoring protocols.
