Job Summary: The Perinatal Surgical Technician reports to a Nurse Director, but also takes direction from the Labor and Delivery Clinical Advisor and Registered Nurses. Responsible for providing support to surgical team members by performing direct and indirect tasks, which contribute to quality care for patients undergoing surgical procedures. Additionally, collaborates with the nursing team to provide care for all patients on the unit. The Perinatal Surgical Technician functions as an integral member of the unit-based care delivery team by performing a variety of technical components essential to the ongoing delivery of quality patient care. Responsible for checking hospital email during work hours to stay apprised of pertinent clinical information such as practice alerts.

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Creates and maintains a sterile field. Monitors sterile technique (Surgical Conscience) in all areas of practice. Utilizes equipment, instruments, and supplies for more complex procedures in the services.

  2. Anticipates needs of surgical team and is able to assist surgeon in holding retractors, sponging and suctioning of operative site, as well as cutting sutures and draping of surgical patient.

  3. Accountable for supplies, equipment and environmental support in a cost-effective manner. Drapes all equipment in a sterile fashion. Identifies specimens for processing by circulating nurse. Assists surgical team with the counting of instruments, sharps, and sponges. Cleans and prepares instruments for sterilization. Removes soiled instruments and equipment.

  4. Safeguards the privacy of patients. Maintains confidentiality relating to patients. Aware of patient's rights as well as legal, moral, and ethical implications of actions.

  5. Maintains stock in operating room supply carts and specialty cart(s) in resource area in coordination with Clinical Resource Nurse. Recognizes, reports problems related to kits or equipment and assists in developing corrective action plan. Contributes to cleanliness and order of the unit. Assists in returning kits and supplies to proper areas within the unit.

Required Qualifications:

  1. High School diploma or GED required.

  2. Certificate 1 Cert Surg Tech (CST) required., and Certificate 2 Basic Life Support required.

  3. 0-1 years related work experience required.

  4. Graduate of an accredited education program for surgical technologists or has completed a training program for surgical technologists in the United States Military or Public Health Service.

  5. Holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally recognized surgical technologist credentialing body accredited by the National commission of Certifying Agencies and recognized by the American College of Surgeons and the Association of Surgical Technologists.

  6. Maintains annual mandatory education requirements, which include emergency skills and unit based competencies. Identifies needs for continued growth and development in conjunction with the unit based educator or clinical nurse specialist.

  7. Basic familiarity with computers. Ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Patient care experience preferred through any of the following areas: CNA, MA, EMT, PCT certificate or currently enrolled nursing student, who has completed at least one clinical rotation. Completion of BIDMC in-house training program. Allied Health and Physician Assistant program candidates. Home Health Aide.

  4. Written Communications: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written English with internal and external customers.

  5. Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and converse in English to communicate effectively with medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.

  6. Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the ability to use them in varied situations.

  7. Team Work: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.

  8. Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

Physical Nature of the Job:

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift.
