Job Description:

Johnson & Johnson Medtech Orthopaedics is recruiting a Senior Director of Systems Engineering and Testing to join the VELYS Digital and Capital organization. This position can be based in multiple Johnson & Johnson MedTech locations across the United States, with preferred locations in Boston, MA, or Palm Beach Gardens, FL. The position will report to the VP of R&D for the VELYS Digital and Capital organization.

The Senior Director of Systems Engineering and Test will lead the Systems Engneering team within our VELYS Digital and Capital organization and will play a key role in the successful design, testing, and validation of digital, navigation, and robotic technology for the orthopedic medical device industry that meet the highest standards of safety, efficacy, and regulatory compliance. The role requires technical expertise in systems engineering and automated testing combined with exceptional leadership skills and a track record of innovation in the field of active implantable devices. The ideal candidate will have a breadth of knowledge in navigation, robotics, or electro-mechanical systems with a strong background in both conceptual design and medical device product development. She/he will be self-motivated and able to work independently with high-level guidance from stakeholders.

The Senior Director of Systems Engineering and Test will provide technical leadership and execution for system risk management, requirements analysis, usability engineering, automated test engineering, configuration management, and reliability engineering. This role is responsible for building technical capabilities and influencing the program’s direction and financial results through a sharing of technical expertise. At this level, the position has a direct contribution to the development of business strategies and is responsible for leading and managing multiple teams of professionals. The Senior Director is responsible for ensuring systems engineering teams implement, support & deliver business results consistent with the VELYS business strategy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Use Systems Engineering methods and tools to develop systems engineering products such as requirements decomposition, system architecture; specifications, systems engineering and program plans, interfaces, risk assessment and mitigation, validation and verification planning, overall integration, etc.

  • Apply interdisciplinary, collaborative approaches to plan, coordinate, design, develop and verify complex systems solutions to drive integration of hardware and software components ensuring seamless functionality and performance.

  • Define system architecture solutions by working with diverse disciplines including ME, EE, Firmware, and Software teams, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance.

  • Lead the development of automated test systems for R&D.

  • Develop verification & validation master test plans and oversee internal and external testing efforts to ensure user needs as well as product requirements are met.

  • Partner with senior management to create and execute the Orthopaedic Digital Systems Engineering strategy.

  • Collaborate with Software, Hardware and Electrical leaders to advance product development programs.

  • Oversee the development of processes that ensure system risk management, requirements analysis, usability engineering, test engineering including system verification & validation, configuration management and reliability engineering are executed with robust and lean intention.

  • Lead and develop teams of systems, test, robotics & controls, totaling 15 employees in matrixed organization to accomplish program goals.

  • Drive strategic collaboration across teams for all facets of product development including design, development, implementation, verification, documentation, and release.

  • Interface with GSM, Quality, Regulatory teams to support medical device documentation and submissions for approved clinical use.

  • Work with Service and Manufacturing teams to develop solutions supporting the product lifecycle.

  • Establish team initiatives and strategies to achieve program goals and improve execution and delivery.

  • Work in partnership with other systems leaders both within J&J and external to benchmark and ensure continuous improvement of company business systems and

  • work environment.

  • Develop, mentor, and train associates to ensure a diverse and strong talent pipeline that is fluent in the competencies of the company.

  • Ensure team leaders develop achievable work plans and contracts to execute product development projects.

  • Direct the systems organization and team leaders throughout product development cycle to ensure projects are executed properly and achieve market success.

  • Align with product management, engineering leads, and project management to understand and plan the technical requirements, manage resources and budget with the goal of maintaining portfolio priorities and project execution timelines.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

  • A minimum of 10+ years’ experience, preferably in the development or manufacturing of complex products.

  • Proven track record of successfully bringing complex medical products and systems from concept to market on schedule & within budget.

  • Hands-on experience with automated test platforms and hardware/software integration.

  • Ability to drive tactical execution decisions that align with business goals and strategy.

  • Ability to improve delivery process and quality.•Strong understanding of software, hardware, capital development and testing for medical devices, including required documentation and testing.

  • Ability to motivate, inspire and influence others across the organization and enterprise to achieve results.

  • Ability to establish and maintain strong relationships with key external and internal stakeholders to attain business results.

  • Able to develop, coach and engage talent, and ensure diverse bench strength for the future.

  • Key skills include: Organizing and planning, interpersonal relationship building and influence, balancing schedule, cost, and quality, project management, conflict resolution, managing and developing teams, working effectively within a diverse group, adaptability in a dynamic environment, problem analysis and resolution, technical expertise, and market knowledge.

Preffered Experience and Skills:

  • Advanced Degree in Engineering or Related Field.

  • Management experience of cross-functional product development teams.

The anticipated base pay for this role is $193,000.00 to $333,500.00.

California Bay Area - The anticipated base pay for this role is $238,000.00 to $382,950.00.
