The Ophthalmic Technician:

  • Performs clinical room preparation and supply ordering as needed. Stocks equipment and medication and ensures proper storage. Works within BCH system to deliver/pick up supplies as needed. Requires visits to other departments. Assist with procedures as needed

  • Ensures patient flow and pertinent documents for specified clinical areas are prepared, organized, and communicated effectively, efficiently, and with accuracy

  • Assists department with regulatory compliance including Joint Commission,

  • Gathers quotes for equipment purchases and arranges equipment repairs

  • Able to take external, slit lamp and ocular fundus photographs, as well as editing and uploading photos to the patient’s medical record

  • Measures and records visual fields with automated perimeter. Instills eye drops as directed by an ophthalmologist/optometrist. Measures intraocular pressures

  • Scans and organizes computerized patient records/images for Ophthalmology Program and phone/ scheduling support and other administrative duties within the program

  • Assists with contact lens insertion/removal session and contact lens cleaning/inventory. Location specific

    To qualify, you must have:

  • High School Diploma/GED required

  • Current registration as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA certification) preferred

  • Experience in a clinical or science-related field is preferred

  • Communication skills to deal effectively with clinicians, administrative staff, and families/young patients and well-developed writing skills

  • Keen organizational skills appropriate to supporting a medical office and balancing assigned tasks and competing responsibilities in the normal course of a clinical ophthalmologic setting

  • Computer and research skills for tasks of word processing and data coordination
