The role is responsible for leading the Package Development & Engineering team and overseeing the planning, execution, and management of the development and engineering of all cosmetic packaging for Living Proof. The individual in this role will play a crucial role in shaping our Brand’s identity through packaging, contributing to the overall success of the company. This is a leadership role and requires a combination of technical expertise, project management skills and an understanding of the Beauty Industry and its consumers as well as directing a team and relating successfully to other parts of our company. This individual will lead our next level package development and industrial design efforts to support our multi-year R&D Innovation strategy.

Responsibilities:

  • Technical Excellence: Deliver technical competency, flawless engineering expertise and comprehensive knowledge of materials used in designing and manufacturing of primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging components for new launches and continuous improvement programs. This role requires someone who has experience with and knowledge of aerosol packaging and filling.

  • Team Leadership: Manage the Package Development team through strong leadership. Create a collaborative and innovative work environment and provide opportunities and experiences for training, knowledge building and career growth for team members.

  • Innovation: Working closely with Marketing and Product Development, deliver an innovation program that will provide superior customer experiences that justify capital investment and provide advantages versus our competition. This individual will have well-developed contacts with the Engineering and Marketing teams at relevant global packaging suppliers to allow us early awareness of new materials and packaging concepts that will enhance the products we bring to market.

  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Drive close collaboration with cross-functional teams inside and outside our company including, project management, supply chain, marketing, product development, customer service, and engineering to seamlessly integrate new packaging with new product formulations to support overall brand strategy. Provide BOMs, Test Plans, Tooling/Supplier recommendations, Critical Timing and Pricing details along with Project Briefs and Risk Profiles to appropriate stakeholders.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Work closely with our internal Regulatory team to build brand awareness of new global packaging regulatory requirements critical to success and drive the timing and process for implementation of compliance.

  • Cost Management: Drive packaging costs down by using experience in component manufacturing to design well engineered, right size packaging that will meet all performance and quality criteria and that will run smoothly, efficiently and cost effectively during filling and assembly. Support on going initiatives to improve Brand Gross Margins by proposing innovative ideas and helping to vet and implement cross-functional projects presented by other teams.

  • Supplier Management: Partner with Supply Chain and Procurement teams to identify mission critical packaging suppliers that meet our Brand requirements for Innovation, Technical Capability, Regulatory Conformance, Quality, Price, Capacity and Delivery in determining candidates for new launch programs and the redesign of existing components.

  • Quality Assurance: Drive and implement the development and adoption of global performance based technical specifications and color management processes for packaging components to meet our Brand Quality criteria. Work with our outside CMOs to deliver the highest quality and most cost-efficient Fill and Assembly specifications through Line Trials and Production Start Ups. Work closely with internal Customer Service, Marketing, PD and Quality teams to address promptly any identified packaging quality issues through investigation to correction plan implementation.

  • Sustainability: Partnering with Regulatory, apply knowledge of package sustainability requirements and global initiatives (SPICE, Eco Beauty Score, CARB) to drive discussion and Brand decision making on all package development. Move our sustainability scorecard forward by proposing, timetabling, costing, and implementing each new initiative.

  • Industry and Market Awareness: Have a future focused outlook to understand new industry and consumer developments and trends that are shaping our industry and will affect our business. Develop industry intelligence by leveraging the global knowledge of our packaging suppliers. Leverage consumer insights acquired in the marketplace and from our own internal Brand learnings.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Educational Background:A bachelor’s or advanced degree in Package Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or Chemical Engineering is desirable.

  • Industry Experience:8 to 10 years of concentrated package development experience in the Beauty industry or Personal Care industry with an emphasis on engineering and manufacturability of primary components. Extensive experience with test methods and outcomes used to validate component / package performance in the lab and within the manufacturing environment. Expertise should cover: Extrusion Blow Molding, Injection Molding, Aluminum aerosol packaging, Glass packaging, Decoration techniques, Extruded Tubes, Dispensing systems such as valves and pumps, printing and construction of board and label substrates including adhesives.

  • Leadership Skills:Critical to success is the ability to train and develop the Packaging Team, as well as the presence, communication skills and conviction to be an effective and respected member of a high-quality internal cross-functional team. Represent the Brand persuasively and effectively in its relationships with outside suppliers.

  • Innovation Mindset:This role requires thorough knowledge of present-day technology and practices as well as an ability to think ahead imaginatively, ‘out of the box’, evaluate new packaging ideas with Marketing and PD that are practical, cost-effective, contribute to excellent performance and resonate with customers ahead of our competition, all while keeping an overall focus on sustainability.

This job is a full-time position that requires the candidate to be in the office four days a week with one day remote unless travelling on business to packaging suppliers, CMOs or business meetings. The candidate should expect that there will be travel required up to 25% of the time.
