This position is an anticipated vacancy. It is expected to be vacant by 03/01/2025. However, the current incumbent has a right to rescind their retirement, leave, or resignation up until the day of the expected vacancy date. Your hire will not be confirmed until the position is vacated, and you may start the year as a Long-Term Substitute if the position does not become vacant by the start of the school year.

General Description and Goals:

The goals of the Area Manager are to provide technical and organizational support to the

Office of Facilities Management, Headmasters, Principal’s and Operational Superintendents

regarding custodial services operations in Boston Public School buildings.

Reports to:

Assistant Director and/or Senior Buildings and Grounds Manager for Facilities Management

Responsibilities:

  • Provides, supervisory support to the Senior, Junior and Part-Time

  • Acts as a consultant to the Operational Superintendents, Headmasters, Principals and Central Facilities Management personnel on the technical aspects of custodial services.

  • On a monthly basis, and when needed - more frequently, inspects all assigned schools to ensure compliance with cleaning standards developed by the Office of Facilities Management,fills out inspection reports with recommended improvement plans, forwards copies to Principals, Headmasters, Operational Superintendents and the Director of Facilities Management or Designee.

  • Investigates and recommends State of the Art cleaning equipment, identifies and coordinates training programs to include demonstration of tools, equipment, products and cleaning standards.

  • Implements the Safety Program developed by the Office of Facilities Management that will reduce injuries and promote safety awareness.

  • Ensures compliance to local, state, and federal laws, including Right to Know Laws, through periodic inspections and reports all findings to the Director of Facilities Management or Designee.

  • Acts as liaison between Principals/Headmasters and Planning and Engineering.

  • Supervises, oversees and evaluates full and part time employees.

  • Coordinates supervision of students in STRIVE program.

  • Coordinates the recycling system cluster-wide.

  • Evaluates new products and equipment.

  • Reviews and/or makes out building work schedules as needed and reviews equipment and supplies assigned to the schools.

  • Trains Senior, Junior and Part Time Custodians.

  • Responds to emergencies and investigates and responds to complaints.

  • Performs other assignments as directed by the Director of Facilities Management, or Designee, including organizational changes made by the Boston School Committee.

Qualifications - Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or five (5) years experience in a custodial services supervisory capacity or five (5) years in Facilities Management or three (3) years supervisory experience in a major cleaning company.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and management skills.

  • Excellent Interpersonal skills.

  • Basic knowledge of Heating Ventilation and Air Condition (HVAC) equipment and electrical systems.

  • Broad scope of knowledge of Facilities Management.

  • Candidate must be available 24/7 for all emergencies - occasional off shift and weekends required for District events and Department functions.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs or other data gathering platforms.

  • Candidate must possess and maintain a MA Drivers License.

Qualifications - Preferred:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management.

  • Ten(10) years of supervisory experience in Facilities Management with demonstrated success in supervising an exemplary Building Services operation.

    TERMS: City of Boston Residency is Required.
