Boston Public Schools Application Developer (SY24-25) in Boston, Massachusetts

Boston Public Schools (BPS) is seeking a skilled and experienced Application Developer to join our Information Technology Application team. The ideal candidate will play a leading role in developing and maintaining enterprise-class technology solutions that support the district's educational goals, enhance data integration, and improve data-driven decision-making. Examples of technology solutions but not limited to the student information system(SIS), transportation management, and school lottery systems. The candidate should enjoy solving important problems using technology for stakeholders across the district and have experience using empathy and know-how to support and improve the solutions we enable. Key Responsibilities: Application Development: Ability to own design, development and support of key features in critical systems Design, develop, test, and maintain API and web applications that align with Ed-Fi standards to facilitate data interoperability and improve education processes. Develop and maintain key enterprise-class technology solutions such as but not limited to SIS, transportation management, and school lottery systems using C#, Java, Python, R, SQL and Javascript. Collaborate with cross-functional teams throughout BPS to gather requirements, develop technical specifications, and implement innovative solutions. Be a leader on the team who will help improve practices in areas such as knowledge management, continuous delivery, and quality monitoring and improvement Data Management: Manage and transform large volumes of educational data to support reporting, analytics, and decision-making. Extracting, transforming and loading data between enterprise-class applications such as but not limited to SIS, transportation management, school lottery and asset management, Implement data validation and cleansing procedures to maintain data quality. Strong SQL programming skills. Security and Compliance: Ensure compliance with data security and privacy regulations, including FERPA, and state-level requirements. Implement security measures to protect sensitive educational data. Documentation: Maintain high-quality documentation of applications, integration processes, and system configurations. Provide training and support to end-users and other IT staff as needed. Collaboration: Work closely with IT team members, educational staff, and external vendors to identify opportunities for technology improvements. Participate in cross-functional teams and projects related to educational technology initiatives. Quality Assurance: Conduct thorough testing and quality assurance to ensure the reliability and performance of applications. Identify and address bugs and issues promptly. Qualifications - Required: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. Master's degree is a plus. Proven experience in application development with a focus on end-to-end solutions Proficiency in programming languages such as C#, Java, Python, or JavaScript. Familiarity with educational data systems, databases, and ETL processes. Experience with security and compliance requirements in the education sector. Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Effective communication and teamwork abilities. Self-motivated with a strong commitment to ongoing professional development. Qualifications - Preferred: Experience with cloud-based technologies (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud). Knowledge of data warehousing and data analytics tools, such as but not limited to PoweBI, Snowflake and DBT. Familiarity with agile software development methodologies. Familiarity with Ed-Fi standards and data integration Terms: Managerial, C51.
