Salary: $22.41 to 24.87, Grade 5

Terms: Full Time / Non-exempt / Full Benefits

About the Role: The Veterans Benefit Specialist assists the veterans of Burleigh County and their dependents in obtaining federal and state benefits to which they are entitled.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Requires an Associate degree with major coursework in office support or business, public administration, social science, or related field; and two (2) years of experience performing a variety of high-level, complex customer service tasks in a professional environment.

  • Preference will be given to honorably discharged veterans from the Unted States Armed Services.

  • Must successfully complete accreditation training with the National Associate of County Veterans Service Officers within two (2) years form date of employment.

  • Must be proficient with computer technology, including MS Office suite.

  • Ability to work with diverse populations.

  • Ability to remain calm and composed under stressful conditions.

  • Ability to read, research, interpret and apply a complex set of laws, rules, and regulations.

  • Requires a high degree of written and verbal communication skills while dealing with co-workers, clients, or the public.

  • Ability to accurately and clearly complete required paperwork.

  • Ability to handle multiple duties and priorities under limited supervision

  • Application will be subject to a post offer civil and criminal background check.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Assist clients with preparation of application forms for pension, compensation, education benefits, medical care, VA home loans, state loans and grant, state combat veteran bonuses, and other programs and benefits.

  • Interview veterans, dependents, and others to determine needs and eligibility for the benefits and services; obtain information and supporting documents needed to prepare completed claims packages.

  • Assist Veterans and dependents in resolving problems with benefit granting agencies.

  • Apply for benefits through the North Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs grant and aid loan programs.

  • Research records of individuals with service-connected disabilities to prepare claims for potential increase of benefits.

  • Research and obtain supporting documents of veterans' secondary conditions possibly service connected to a primary condition.

  • Initiate resources and referrals to other agencies providing services not available through the Veterans Service Office.

  • Interpret correspondence from benefit granting agencies for recipients and assist the recipient in responding to the correspondence, which may include gathering additional documents and information.

  • Provide outreach, assessments, referrals, and access needed for veterans' dependents not able to visit the office for reasons of being hospitalized or institutionalized.

  • Assist veterans and dependents with documentation needed for claims or insurance and coordinate burial benefits with family and funeral home.

  • Perform other duties as required and assigned.
