Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Building Energy Research Scientist in Bismarck, North Dakota

Overview

The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is accelerating the transition to a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and energy systems and in advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy.

The Building Systems Group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking an experienced Building Systems Research Scientist with an interest in helping the building industry understand and implement the latest technologies, techniques, and best practices to make buildings more energy efficient and resilient to climate change. Candidates should have a background that includes building science, building construction, and a high level of familiarity with the latest tools and products used to effectively communicate to the industry how and why to adopt the latest building energy efficiency materials, technologies, and construction approaches. Technical background with residential building technologies such as heat pumps and advanced thermal enclosures is a plus. This position will support the residential and commercial buildings research teams at PNNL. The ideal candidate will be passionate, driven and be motivated to contribute to efforts to expand current areas of study.

Responsibilities

The position requires solid analytical and strong communication skills (including writing, editorial, and training skills), and the ability to both lead and work in teams with federal agencies, states, regional energy efficiency organizations, trade groups, utilities, and other program providers. The position will also involve communication with leading scientists, engineers and managers at DOE and its national laboratories, with consultants and academics, at utility and market transformation organizations, with manufacturers and trade organizations, and with all facets of the supply chain and market, including consumers.

The position requires solid analytical skills, knowledge and experience related to the analysis and communication of building science and technology concepts, products, and techniques that are focused on energy efficiency:

  • Energy systems servicing the residential sectors including energy efficiency technologies and policies.

  • Development of communication and training products and deliverables that include printed, video, web-based, and social media.

  • Energy and energy efficiency market strengths, structures, barriers, climate considerations, code limitations, supply chain opportunities, and demographics.

  • Behavior of consumers, manufacturers, utilities and product supply chains and how they interact with and value energy efficient performance.

  • Communication, interaction, and collaboration with a range of stakeholders including manufacturers, supply chain businesses, trade groups, utilities, buyers’ groups, energy efficiency orgs/policymakers, and consumers.

Occasionally travel to attend conferences and present results of work in a variety of forums, support relevant education in public forums and webinars, in meetings with DOE and other national laboratories, in PNNL internal meetings, or conferences, and in stakeholder meetings.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant experience -OR-

  • MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant experience -OR-

  • PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Education in the areas of building sciences, science & technology communications, data sciences, stakeholder engagement, or public policy.

  • Demonstrated experience with the development and editing of communication and training products and deliverables that include printed, video, web-based, and social media associated with building science, building construction, and building energy savings technologies and construction techniques.

  • Demonstrated experience in the building energy science or policy field, technology assessment, development and distribution of communication products that can make highly technical/complex processes and technologies understandable for building industry stakeholders.

  • Experience in the construction industry. Hands-on experience in building residential buildings, working with contractors, and addressing and solving residential building construction issues and challenges.

Starting pay is calculated from the minimum of the pay range and actual placement in the range is determined based on an individual’s relevant job-related skills, qualifications, and experience.
