Join Our Team as a Welder!

We are a leading company specializing in the fabrication of moveable bridges, hydropower systems, locks and dams, and other industrial structures. We are seeking a skilled Welder to join our team in Birmingham, Alabama. This role involves performing submerged arc and 3G flux core steel plate welding and heavy fabrication in a dynamic job shop environment. Responsibilities
  • Follow applicable welding procedures (AWS, AISC).
  • Perform welding at ground level, above ground, and below ground in any required position.
  • Prepare materials for welding by chipping, peening, and grinding.
  • Weld structural materials such as plates, sheets, girders, and tanks, including uncommon structural metals or machine metals under close tolerances.
  • Straighten materials using heat or flame.
  • Perform gouging and scarfing as needed.
  • Pass welding tests in accordance with AWS D1.5 standards.
  • Receive and interpret instructions, prints, sketches, and work orders.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and plan fitting operations.
  • Assist in handling and assembling materials according to detailed drawings.
  • Lay out work lines or fit up jigs for positioning material when required.
  • Ensure work conforms to drawings and specifications.
  • Clean up materials by grinding or chipping.
  • Perform burning and tack welding for assembly purposes.
  • Move materials to and from the work area and position component parts as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
  • Adhere to safety rules and report equipment malfunctions to the proper authority.
  • Perform other duties as instructed by supervision.
Qualifications
  • 5 years of experience in structural steel or fabrication welding.
  • Ability to weld to AWS D1.5 quality and specifications.
  • Capability to pass fracture critical inspections.
  • Good communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to read and understand shop fabrication drawings and perform layout, fit-up, and forming of materials according to prints.
  • Strong understanding of welding symbols.
  • Highly motivated and able to work independently.
  • Physically able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience with bridge work.
  • Experience in overhead crane operation.
  • The candidate will need to pass a visual inspection done by one of our inspectors or SMC management of a inch fillet weld before moving on to the actual qualification test. The criterion for this inspection is as follows: the weld shall be free of any undercut, overlap, porosity and shall be consistent in size. The reason for this is that it cuts down wasting actual test plates and helps distinguish whether the candidate possesses the required skillset to pass the test.
