Summer 2025 Field Communications and Signals Intern (Electrical Engineers)

As a Field Communications and Signals (C&S) Intern at NS, you will be given real-life, meaningful assignments that will put your skills and education into practice. You will assist field officers and staff on a variety of projects, providing you with a glimpse of what it's like to be a full-time field supervisor with NS.

Primary Duties:

  • Assisting with testing and maintenance of C&S facilities

  • Installation and commissioning of C&S equipment and systems

  • Accuracy verification of databases used in hump yards and train dispatching systems

  • Revisions to electronic drawings and schematics

  • Deployment of new technology

  • Other duties as assigned

Work Environment:

  • Willing to relocate anywhere throughout our 22-state network for the duration of the internship. Housing stipend will be provided to those who apply.

  • Previous work locations include, Roanoke, VA, Toledo, OH, Bellevue, OH, Harrisburg, PA, Cincinnati, OH, Atlanta, GA, Macon, Chattanooga, TN, and Birmingham, AL.These locations are not guaranteed. Your input on location will be considered, but not guaranteed.

  • Typical work hours are between 6 AM to 4 PM Monday - Friday, plus any additional hours as required, including occasional overnight travel. On call work is required at time throughout the summer.

  • Interns may also travel with a supervisor to field locations to ensure adherence to corporate and departmental standards and procedures.

  • Must be able to work outside and be on your feet daily.

  • This is a leadership position that works closely with our union workforce.

Education/Experience:

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s / master’s degree

  • Preferred Degree Paths: Electro-Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Electronics Engineering Technology

Additional Information :

  • All new hires for this safety critical position must complete a pre-employment medical exam including a physical, vision, hearing, alcohol, and drug audit assessment.

  • You must have reliable transportation to and from your job location.

Tentative Internship Timeline

Week 1: Safety Training in McDonough, GA

Weeks 2-11 : Based out of your training location

Week 12 : Close out event and presentations.

Compensation

  • Freshman Year (27 or fewer credits): $3,557

  • Sophomore Year (28-59 credits): $3,922

  • Junior Year (60-89 credits): $4,266

  • Senior Year (90 or more credits): $4,493

  • Graduate Student: $5,406

Other Pay/Benefit

  • Pay one-time roundtrip mileage for out-of-area students.

  • $425 bi-monthly housing stipend for out-of-area students (not prorated; note this stipend will be taxed).
