McWane Science Center Aquarist I in Birmingham, Alabama

McWane Science Center counts on the full-time Aquarist 1 to provide daily care to all live plant and animal displays using approved husbandry practices and maintaining the daily upkeep of exhibits, life support systems, and maintaining water quality for the World of Water exhibition. Persons in this position exercise discretion/independent judgment for daily operations.

Accountabilities and Major Duties

  1. Preparation of diets and feeding of animals.
  2. Routine maintenance of equipment on life support systems; including maintaining water quality by monitoring and controlling chemical composition of water and performing water changes as needed.
  3. Maintain records of animal behavior, medications, water quality and related data, including inventory and quarantine systems.
  4. Assist with construction (i.e. plumbing, carpentry, and electrical) of new and existing aquarium exhibits including holding and quarantine facilities.
  5. Assist in diagnosis and treatment of animals to ensure the health of all living systems.
  6. Assist with training of interns and volunteers as assigned.
  7. Assist in field collection of animals.
  8. Maintain a clean and safe working environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelors degree in biology or related field or relevant experience.
  2. Enthusiasm for working with living collections.
  3. Teamwork and cooperation skills.
  4. Available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  5. SCUBA certified or willingness to train and complete certification within 6 months of hire.
  6. Basic plumbing, minor carpentry, and electrical skills required.
  7. Public speaking skills and willingness to speak to small groups as needed or assigned.
  8. Working knowledge of PC computers.
  9. Posse ss a valid drivers license subject to acceptable annual motor vehicle reports.
  10. Minimum p ersonal vehicle liability insurance as required by State law.

Minimum Physical Qualifications

  1. Stand for extended periods of time without being able to leave the work area.
  2. Climb ladders and stairs in performing the work.
  3. Lift objects frequently in performing the work (60 lbs).
  4. Pull or push objects on a regular basis (100 lbs).
  5. Carry objects on a regular basis in the arms or on the shoulders (50 lbs).
  6. Grasp objects utilizing the fingers.
  7. Reach for objects above the head or below the waist.
  8. Stoop or crouch by bending at the waist or by bending legs.
  9. Crawl in confined spaces on the hands and knees to perform work.
  10. Ability to maneuver in close confinement.
  11. Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more with or without corrective lenses.
  12. Must be able to wear the proper PPE whenever necessary working conditions require action
  13. Exposure to constant or intermittent high noise levels.
  14. Exposure to tissues, chemicals, fumes and vapors that could potentially affect the health of the employee.
  15. Handle hazardous materials.
  16. Ability to SCUBA-dive exhibits.
  17. Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
