Senior Archaeologist

POWER Engineers, Inc., is looking for a Senior Archaeologist to join our Environmental Division – Resource Assessment and Mapping, Western Cultural Resources Department. This full-time position offers a leadership opportunity and can be based out of our office locations in Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Montana, or Idaho, or can be worked remotely from a mutually agreed-upon location in the western United States.

Roles and Responsibilities

As a Senior Archaeologist, you will help build POWER’s environmental team focused on transmission/distribution lines, fire hardening, renewable energy, transportation projects, environmental surveys, NEPA/CEQA analyses, and permitting services. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to lead archaeological survey work on federal and other public lands throughout the Western United States and write reports for federal and state agency submittal. Projects may involve extended periods of fieldwork in remote areas including other Western states. Experience working with and executing projects regulated by various federal and state agencies as well as permittable experience on federal lands throughout the West is highly desirable. Remote monitoring experience and willingness to participate in these projects is also highly desirable. T

Responsibilities will include technical support, writing support, and providing cultural resource management (CRM) expertise to the development and execution of projects in the western United States. The incumbent should possess an advanced understanding of anthropological and archaeological field techniques in connection with locating, testing, recording, mapping, and evaluating archaeological sites and supporting field surveys. Conducting field surveys (pedestrian and shovel test surveys) using topographic maps, online mapping resources, and ESRI Field Maps and other GPS data collection software will be a regular part of this role.

This position requires the ability to work long hours, in difficult or remote environments, and in varying weather conditions. The position will also require the ability to work with and lead groups composed of diverse personalities. A positive attitude and ability to accept direction is a must, as well as the ability to work independently and to fully plan and execute personal assignments with minimal instruction. Effective communication skills are important for success in this role.

Required Education/Experience

  • Master’s degree in Archeology, Anthropology, or a related discipline

  • 5+ years of previous CRM field experience including leadership positions

  • Skill in planning, writing, and reviewing cultural resource reports in support of Class III inventories and NEPA processes/documents

  • Knowledge and understanding of equipment, technology, and paperwork used in the recording and documenting of archeological sites and artifacts

  • Developing, planning, and executing cultural resource projects to support Section 106 and various state regulation undertakings in the western region.

  • Executing cultural resource file searches within the various States.

  • Ability to qualify for and maintain federal and state permits in several Western United States

  • Ability to learn and communicate local cultural history in new project areas

  • Ability to work independently, and to fully plan and execute personal assignments with minimal instruction

  • Knowledge and willingness to learn POWER company health and safety standards

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Ability to successfully lead teams composed of diverse personalities

  • Ability to work long hours in varied environments and in varying weather condition.

  • Effectively and respectfully communicate with team members, managers, and other agency representatives

  • Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Idaho, or Montana residence is strongly preferred but not required.

Preferred Education/Experience

  • Experience in utility transmission, pipeline, and renewable energy projects

  • Staff mentorship and previous staff leadership experience

  • Experience developing cost estimates, scopes of work, and schedules for complex field surveys and larger CRM projects

  • Experience with block and linear survey, background research and leading field crews

  • CPR/First Aid/OSHA certifications and experience

  • Demonstrated writing skills. Copies of 2 to 3 reports should be provided for review

Base Salary Range: $85K - $110K

The range for this position is being displayed in compliance with all state and local regulations. Salaries are set based on a number of factors to include an individual's job-related knowledge, skills, experience and education. This means that no two candidates are alike. The range provided above does not include additional compensation such as bonus, health benefits, vacation, 401(k) match, etc.
