What You Will Do:

  • Supports library-wide systems initiatives for improving the library services platform (Alma) to create bibliographic records in ExLibris' Alma software, including importing specific OCLC records or generating records from NLM-provided templates.

  • Update preliminary cataloging records to current full-level national standards, ensuring compliance with NLM's local policies.

  • Upgrade OCLC copy records to full-level AACR2 or RDA standards as per BSR MAP and NLM's local modifications.

  • Update original cataloging records to full-level RDA standards, following BSR MAP and NLM's local policies.

  • Enhance cataloging records by adding comprehensive MeSH terms and access points for all agents listed in the statement of responsibility.

  • Verify the existence of fully established authority records in the LCNAMES file in the Alma Community Zone for all name headings used in upgraded or created records.

  • Create new authority records in the Alma Institutional Zone (local NLMAF) when required and make necessary NACO-required modifications in OCLC Connexion software.

  • Ensure accuracy of holdings and item records in all bibliographic entries, adhering strictly to NLM's local policies and responsible for catalog maintenance.

  • Create separate Host Bibliographic records for physical volumes bound with titles as needed, following established templates.

  • Follow project-specific guidance, local policies, and practices outlined for cataloging projects.

What You Will Need:

  • Knowledge of library print and digital acquisitions and/or cataloging rules, practices, and procedures.

  • Ability to organize, analyze, and interpret data to acquire print and digital materials and/or catalog library materials.

  • Ability to use integrated library systems, applications, or other information technologies.

  • Bachelor's degree from an ALA-accredited Program in Library and Information Studies.

  • Demonstrated experience working with Special Collections materials such as rare printed and archival materials.

  • Minimum of Four (4) years experience with the following cataloging tools:

  • Assigning Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) to cataloging

  • MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data (MARC21)

  • Anglo American Cataloging Rules (AACR2)

  • Library of Congress Rule Interpretations (LCRIs)

  • Resource, Description, and Access (RDA) original toolkit

  • Library of Congress-Program for Cooperative Cataloging Policy Statements (LC-PCC PS)

  • BIBCO Standard Record (BSR) Metadata Application Profiles (MAPs)

  • Cataloging materials using ExLibris' Alma software

  • Cataloging historical or special collections of monographs

What Would Be Nice To Have:

  • Master's degree in library science, Information Science, or related field

  • Two years of experience with non-MARC metadata and metadata conversion from other formats is strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience cataloging special formats such as music, film, media, and electronic resources.

  • Proven related experience with the NIH or other federal agencies.

The annual salary range for this position is $65,900.00-$98,900.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
