Burts Honey Farm Beekeeper Assistant in Benton, Pennsylvania
Workers will assist in a variety of positions related to beekeeping. In the bee yard, workers will assist owner with feeding and providing treatment to keep the bees healthy. During honey harvest, workers will help take off honey and place boxes on pallets. Shop work will include woodworking to make bee pallets and bee boxes, painting bee boxes and going through equipment to prepare it for use in the bee yard. Honey extracting involves scraping frames and loading them into extractors, then unload frames and stack them back in boxes. The work varies daily depending on the bees' needs throughout the season, but when the bees do no need attention is when shop work will be accomplished.
Its very important to have workers that are not allergic to bees. While we take precautions to not get stung, bee stings do happen. Also workers must be able to be on ones feet for periods of time and withstand hot temperatures in a beesuit outside in the sun. Beehives and boxes of honey can weigh about 80lbs and they must be carried up to twenty feet to be placed on pallets when necessary.
