Indian Health Service Licensed Practical Nurse (Outpatient) in Belcourt, North Dakota

Summary This position is located in the Outpatient Nursing Department of the Quentin Burdick Health Center in Belcourt, ND. The purpose of the position is to provide direct patient care to patients with a variety of medical, surgical, pediatric, women's health, and health maintenance needs. Performs duties under the general supervision and guidance of a registered nurse and assists other health care providers in providing care and maintaining a safe and quality care environment. Responsibilities Provides direct care for ambulatory care patients of all ages with diverse nursing and medical diagnoses and health care/maintenance needs. Collects data on health status of the patient using established assessment skills to identify immediate health care/maintenance and nursing needs. Assesses changes in patient's conditions and implements appropriate interventions and/or reports changes to the supervising registered nurse as appropriate. Documents observations, measurements, nursing interventions and outcomes for assigned patients in the medical record using approved forms and formats. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR) In order to qualify for this position, you must have current license to practice as practical or vocational nurses in a State or territory of the United States or the District of Columbia or must have applied for a license to practice. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: GS-04: Six (6) months of nursing experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-03 grade level in the Federal service. Examples Include: Administering medication both orally and by intra-muscular injections; reporting and recording vital signs; preparing patient for special laboratory tests; setting up and managing specialized equipment. -OR- Successfully completed a practical nurse program of at least nine (9) months duration combined with 1 year of nursing assistant experience. -OR- completion of a 2-year degree program in an accredited community college, junior college, or college or university in practical nursing. GS-05: One (1) year of specialized experience with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This specialized experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service. Examples Include: Recognizing need for and instituting emergency measures when indicated; performing catheterizations, changing surgical dressing, performing suctioning; administering vitamins, antibiotics and corticosteroids; calculating and adjusting infusion rates using standard formulas or electronic controlling devices. GS-06: One (1) year of specialized experience with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This specialized experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Examples Include: Assisting with escorting/transporting patient's to various services areas in the health center; instructing patient's role in various procedures and assists with chaperoned examinations; reinforcing patient teaching given by the professional nurse and medical staff; administering oral medications, performing subcutaneous and intramuscular injections; maintaining immunization inventory including ordering, logging, and reporting. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. This position has promotion potential to the GS-06 grade level.
