Period of Work: May-August 2025

Full-Time: 40 hours a week

Location: Bedford MA and McLean, VA

In Office Requirement: 5 days a week onsite

Clearance Requirement: Will be submitted for DHS Suitability Clearance

The Center for Securing the Homeland (CSH) at MITRE supports the Homeland Security Systems Engineering and Development Institute (HSSEDI) FFRDC and the NIST National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) by providing independent and objective expertise to enhance mission capabilities. CSH collaborates with federal agencies like DHS and NIST to deliver innovative solutions and develop frameworks that strengthen national security and cybersecurity infrastructure.

CSH delivers to its customers the full spectrum of software development capabilities from prototyping, through architecture and modeling, to software assessments. We prototype new capabilities and deliver advanced experimental functionality to address unmet business and mission needs.

As an Intern working in software engineering or computer science, you will work with a team to apply your knowledge and gain experience with one or more of the following:

  • Human factors engineering, human-computer integration, human-in-loop testing, user experience/user interface

  • Front-end, back-end, middleware or full-stack software development

  • Artificial intelligence

  • Cyber software

  • DevSecOps

  • Embedded systems and Internet of Things

  • Machine learning and artificial intelligence

  • Modeling and simulation

  • Model-based engineering

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be a student enrolled full-time pursuing an accredited degree seeking program in Software Engineering, Computer Science or a related degree program and continue to be enrolled full-time the semester following the internship.

  • "Hands-on" skills in at least one or more programming language

  • Exposure to software development tools and frameworks, including source control management tools (e.g., Git)

  • Familiarity with software development methodologies

  • Sustained excellence in academic performance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience having applied computer science learning to an internship or research/lab position.

  • Knowledge of software design patterns

  • Proficient knowledge in Python, C or Java

  • Experience in different web frameworks, libraries and/or machine learning libraries

  • Knowledge of database technologies, including relational or NoSQL

  • Demonstrated interest in serving the public
