Physical Activity Level:

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in education, psychology, social work, sociology, or related field, with a background and/or experience in working in the field of visually impaired plus 2 years of work experience with visually impaired individuals.

  • A Master's degree in the fields listed above will substitute for 1 year of the work experience with visually impaired individuals.

  • Prior administrative or supervisory experience and experience working with children at a residential school is preferred.

  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification required, or must secure such certification within the first 6 months of employment.

  • Must possess skills in human relations, planning, organizing, coordinating, writing and computer use to perform related office functions.

Job Concepts

I. Managerial Responsibilities

  • Implements policies and regulations mandated by SSD and other state and federal regulatory agencies.

  • Assists in the development of policies and procedures affecting the LSVI Dormitory Program, implements school philosophy and programs, and develops and establishes long range strategic plans.

  • Prepares budgets, projects, contracts, interagency agreements and reports as directed.

  • Exhibits knowledge of special education rules and regulations associated with implementation of state and federal laws.

  • Observes, records, and evaluates student behavior to create a positive living and learning environment, and to administer discipline as appropriate.

  • Monitors the effectiveness of residential programs through observation, written reports, parental input, and student and staff feedback.

  • Ensures a safe environment that prevents injury and abuse.

  • Demonstrates appropriate and effective office management skills such as planning, organizing and implementing.

  • Exercises good judgment in making decisions.

  • Maintains complete and accurate administrative and student progress records and exercises confidentiality of information in accordance with requirements of the law.

  • Maintains a positive relationship with professional associates, state and local agencies, the community and the parents of the students.

  • Monitors the maintenance, repair and inventory of facilities and equipment in assigned area.

II. Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervises staff and students on the day or night shift in the LSVI residential program providing leadership and coordination for a team approach.

  • Interacts daily with staff to promote a positive work environment and the school's vision of "Kids Come First."

  • Applies knowledge and skills of supervision to programs and personnel demonstrating appropriate and effective interpersonal skills.

  • Delegates responsibilities as appropriate.

  • Conducts performance planning and evaluations with staff according to required timelines and maintains evaluation records and reports as mandated by law: Performance Evaluation System (PES) for classified employees and Performance Evaluation Unclassified for unclassified non-compass evaluated employees.

  • Provides for staff development and assists in the staff development program by providing in-service training and workshops for Student Life Division staff.

  • Participates in training offerings and workshops for renewal of CPI certifications

III. Programmatic Responsibilities

  • Exhibits understanding of disabled children and their needs and demonstrates awareness of specialists, agencies, and organizations that serve disabled children and their families. Works with community service providers who offer enhanced supportive services for students, e.g., social services, family services, child protection.

  • Develops, formulates, implements, coordinates and evaluates behavioral and living skills activities that enhance the emotional, physical, social and educational development of blind and/or visually impaired students in the residential program, ages 3-22.

  • Contributes to and implements living skills goals and objectives in conjunction with faculty, staff and family members.

  • Attends ILSP pre-staffings and team meetings as needed.

  • Coaches peer team members from other programs on campus regarding their interface with a child and communicates with all staff members involved with each student's living skills goals.

  • Supports students in their academic endeavors in the after school program, assists staff and students with their daily routines and schedules, and interacts with students to enhance their social skills and personal development.

  • Respects the individual worth and dignity of each student and maintains an appropriate student-adult relationship.

  • Applies positive peer culture, behavior modification or work therapy programming to students to alter negative behavior patterns and to teach valuable life skills.

  • Works closely with the After School Program Coordinator, Counselors, Assistant Principal, Principal, and parents, and with all school staff who support student growth and development and works with other school staff as required providing input on a specific student's individual progress, behavior, and achievement.

  • Provides guidance to children regarding personal habits, discipline, daily living skills and behavior to ensure a constant reinforcement of positive, socially acceptable lifestyles and meets with students who are experiencing emotional/behavioral difficulties.

  • Participates in student disciplinary staffing in the absence of the Dormitory Director.

VI. Vocational Assessment

  • Gathers and reviews existing formal and informal assessment/evaluation information.

  • Gathers additional informal assessment information through interviews with the students, parents, family members, teachers, caregivers, service coordinators, rehabilitation counselors, friends, in-school work experience supervisor, etc.

  • Collects data and maintains confidential and accurate case files for students.

  • Participates in transition meetings as assigned.

  • Observes students during in-school work experience, during classroom activities, at home and other current school and community environments.

VII. Job Development and Job Placement

  • Conducts analysis of work sites and assignments, as well as situational assessments of individual students in real work settings to gather pertinent information (e.g., job choice/preference, work strengths, response to instruction/training methods, job accommodation needs, job modification needs, response to coworkers, endurance, speed, reinforcement needs, etc.) as part of job development and placement for a student to ensure a good job match.

  • Performs traditional job development activities and not-traditional job development activities such as job sharing and job carving/creation.

  • Maintains a database and tracking system of active and inactive employers.

  • Performs task analysis of job duties.

  • Matches student's strengths and abilities to specific job duties.

  • Assists in training plans.

  • Develops job support plans (including natural supports).

  • Assesses transportation needs.

VIII. Coordination of Job Related Supports

  • Orients the new employee to the community (selects travel option, designs and implements a travel program) and to the work environment.

  • Establishes rapport and maintains a positive relationship with supervisors, coworkers, family and state and local agencies.

  • Analyzes specific job duties and reassesses job/worker compatibility.

  • Identifies natural supports (both formal and informal mechanisms) and natural reinforcers in the work environment.

  • Performs task analysis of job duties to be instructed, if appropriate.

  • Makes or seeks assistance in designing job modifications.

  • Identifies strategies to increase worker production rate.

  • Designs and implements program(s) to facilitate the use of naturally occurring cures, contingencies, and/or reinforces.

  • Assists the worker in using self-management strategies.

  • Expands worker performance (across supervisors, job duties, and interpersonal situations). Assists the VR Counselor in referrals to obtain information regarding the impact of Social Security Work Incentives on the student's SSI, SSDI, Medicaid, etc. and in developing and completing all needed work incentives information.

IX. Professional Conduct
