Job Information
University of Maryland, Baltimore Postdoctoral Fellow in Baltimore, Maryland
The Department of Neurology, Division of Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is recruiting for a highly qualified postdoctoral researcher to perform clinical research related to the use of adaptive optics (AO) techniques as applied to optical coherence tomography (OCT) and scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO). These techniques allow visualization of the living human retina at the level of single cells. The laboratory of Dr. Daniel Harrison at the University of Maryland is collaborating with the laboratories of Drs. Zhuolin Liu and Daniel X. Hammer at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to perform clinically oriented research projects related to the use of this technology to better understand and monitor the pathology of multiple sclerosis. The candidate will participate directly in this collaboration. More specifically, the candidate will be expected to: conduct human imaging in healthy and diseased eyes, perform data collection. processing, analysis and presentation, upgrade and maintain AO imagers, and assess imaging quality and performance of AO-enhanced ophthalmic devices. The candidate will also perform work on data processing and analysis for images acquired using more conventional, clinical-grade OCT and SLO imagers and may be asked to develop novel processing and analysis approaches, algorithms, and software as they apply to both conventional and AO-enhanced OCT and SLO. The candidate will become an active member of the neuro-imaging lab of Dr. Daniel Harrison at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, in addition to working directly in the AO imaging laboratory at the FDA campus (Federal Research Center at White Oak, Silver Spring, Maryland) through a volunteer position at the FDA. Thus, time will be split between the two campuses. The well-equipped FDA lab contains several different AO and OCT imagers and are an ideal work environment for a self-starting post-doctoral fellow to make an impact on public health and to accelerate the translation of AO imaging technology to wide-spread clinical use. Desired Skills and Experience We are looking for a highly motivated, and career-oriented research individual, with a PhD in biomedical or electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field with a focus on medical imaging analysis. An ideal candidate will have experience with adaptive optics, optical coherence tomography, optical imaging or ophthalmoscopy. Programming experience with MATLAB, C , Python, and/or LabVIEW is required. Experience with image analysis software, such as ImageJ, MIPAV, and/or ITK-SNAP is desired. Experience in developing and/or utilizing novel software and/or machine learning approaches to medical imaging is desired. Previous experience with adaptive optics optical coherence tomography and/or scanning light ophthalmoscopy would be optimal but is not required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, technical expertise, attention to detail, and scientific and engineering creativity are essential. This is an educational program and candidates should be within 5 years of completing a Ph.D. degree. The candidate should have had residence in the United States for a minimum of 3 of the last 5 years. The program is open to all qualified U.S. and non-U.S citizens without regard to race, color, age religion, sex, national origin, physical or mental disability, or status as a veteran or disabled veteran. Please include a detailed CV, a brief statement including a research plan, interests and skills, and the names of three references, and a short description of your doctoral training and future research goals.
