Talen Energy Plant Technician-Environmental/Wastewater in Baltimore, Maryland

Talen Energy is looking for candidates to fill an opening for Plant Technician-Environmental/Wastewater. This position would be located at the Talen Energy Brandon Shores facility in Baltimore, MD (Pasadena area). We are looking for qualified candidates with over six (6) years’ experience in generation and electric supply systems, and a Class 2 industrial wastewater license. The Brandon Shores Plant is a fully scrubbed coal-fired generating station.

Primary Purpose & Summary:

Ensures day-to-day field implementation of environmental compliance and permitting requirements. Develops and guides the implementation of site environmental plans and programs using approved standards, procedures, codes, guides and other regulatory criteria. Operates and helps maintain the Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The expected salary range for this position is $70,000.00 to $100,000.00 annually. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience and other job-related factors as permitted by law. Successful candidates will also participate in Talen Energy’s Short-Term Incentive program.

Responsibilities:

  1. Development of permit applications and other environmental licenses.

  2. Oversight and/or operation of regulatory monitoring systems.

  3. Regulatory reporting and record keeping.

  4. Assessment of site compliance activities.

  5. Computer based analysis.

  6. Development of equipment and material specifications.

  7. Testing of equipment and oversight of environmental contractors.

  8. Serves as liaison between site and environmental regulatory agencies and other external stakeholders on environmental matters during inspection/enforcement and environmental outreach activities.

Skills/Competencies:

  1. Duties may include providing environmental regulatory and technical guidance to site first line supervisors and operators.

  2. Managing hazardous materials and waste streams.

  3. Participating in field implementation of remediation projects, collecting samples and performing standard field analysis of wastewater, solid wastes and air emissions.

  4. Participating in the development and delivery of site environmental training.

Education & Experience Required:

  1. Successful completion of post-high school courses in engineering mathematics, physical science and/or technical oriented studies.

  2. Over six years’ experience in the Company’s generation and electric supply system, or the equivalent combination of formal education/training and experience.

  3. Experience with personal computers and the Company’s applications software systems.

  4. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.

  5. Must satisfy respirator qualifications .

Licenses/Certifications Required:

  1. Valid driver’s license and ability to meet Company driving standards.

  2. A Class 2 industrial wastewater license.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer, stamina to maintain attention to detail, despite interruptions, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen for long period of time. Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the phone. It may be necessary at times to visit power plants coal combustions byproduct landfills, or other potentially hazardous industrial locations, primarily for the purpose of evaluating compliance. At times, an individual may respond to environmental release situations.

At the Power Plant facility and in/out door environment, must be able to work in adverse conditions that may include, but not be limited to the following:

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to climb stairs, ladders, and work on elevated platforms. Must be able to stand for long periods of time.

Must be able to lift 45 pounds overhead and 75 pounds from the floor to 36 inches.

Must be willing to travel to other facilities if needed.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color distinction with vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Must be able to work around high voltage.

Must have manual dexterity and ability to manipulate keyboards.

Must be capable of wearing respirators and working in dusty environments.

On occasions employee may be required to work at heights to collect samples or conduct other environmental assessment, where guarding or fall protection is required.

Mental Demands:

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills, read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve complex problems, observe and interpret situations, use math and mathematical reasoning; deal with changing, intensive deadlines, and interact with internal and external clients. Must be able to concentrate while under time constraints.

The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and wet or humid conditions. The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock and vibration.

Exposure to hazards associated with power and hand tools, dust, fumes, high pressure steam, high temperatures and confined spaces; and may be regularly subject to external environmental conditions such as cold, heat dust, snow or noise and fumes from equipment or chemicals.

Occupationally hazardous noise exposure may occur in the power plant or other locations where heavy industrial equipment is in use.
