Kennedy Krieger Institute Financial Counselor II in Baltimore, Maryland
Overview
The Financial Counselor II provides routine financial counseling for patients and families who receive services at the International Center for Spinal Cord Injury (ICSCI). The incumbent will provide administrative support functions for ICSCI while providing excellent customer service to patients, families, staff, outside agencies, and other customers. Job functions and activities are periodically measured for adherence to quality and competency standards.
Responsibilities
Verify, analyze, interpret, and document patient health insurance coverage, health plan provisions, or other third-party payment plan arrangements for outpatient treatment at the International Center for Spinal Cord Injury (ICSCI).
Conduct in-person visits with patients and therapists in ICSCI gyms monthly to enhance communication and interpersonal skills, and to foster better working relationships. Initiate phone interviews with patient representatives to secure accurate information relative to financial status and cost of services.
Secure authorizations for ICSCI outpatient programs in an efficient and thorough manner. Conduct follow-up efforts with insurance companies to determine the status of decisions. Monitor insurance benefit thresholds in workqueue and facilitate the acquisition of additional authorizations.
Review Account Review workqueue in Epic to assess accounts with authorization, denial and policy discrepancies. Handle errors efficiently to ensure timely resolution.
Review and work accounts in Claim Edit workqueue in Epic to ensure timely solutions for claims to be released for processing in an appropriate manner. Determine trends and adjust processes to maximize reimbursements.
Review and work ICSCI reports in Epic to ensure timely authorization and referral modifications. Handle discrepancies in a timely manner to avoid denials and potential loss of revenue.
Collaborate with Case Managers, Patient Accounting, therapists, clinicians to improve overall communication, processes, and workflows that impact billing, write-offs, and reimbursements.
Evaluate funding sources and alternate funding sources of payment. Follow through with all funding sources until sources are exhausted or obtained.
Crosstrain on various areas of financial clearance to enhance knowledge in all areas. Provide training to other staff that need an enhanced understanding of your assigned tasks.
Estimate deposit requirements, determine patient liability, and send cost estimates to families, International Team, and external customers.
Resolve customer and provider issues related to financial counseling operations in an efficient and professional manner.
Utilize understanding of business requirements of ICSCI to serve as a liaison between providers and patients.
Assist Manager, Financial Services with training Financial Counselors on insurance clearance and authorization tasks.
Qualifications
Must successfully complete and maintain appropriate certification in Epic according to the timeline established by the department.
EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Associate’s degree in business administration, human services, healthcare administration, or related field preferred
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum four years of experience in healthcare related to admissions and patient accounting required.
Minimum 3 years of experience as a Financial Counselor I highly preferred.
