Johns Hopkins University CO Nurse Practitioner in Baltimore, Maryland

The Johns Hopkins University is seeking a Nurse Practitioner who will work within a clinical operations environment of the Otolaryngology department. The employee will operate under the direction, supervision and responsibility of a physician, and in accordance with established policies evaluates patient’s health status through diagnostic procedures and tests. Provides therapeutic patient care under the direction of a physician and in accordance with established protocols. The Nurse Practitioner will work in an outpatient clinic setting independently (after supervised training and skills acquisition). They will work collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary health team focused on providing comprehensive care to Otolaryngologic patients. The individual will be responsible for making independent decisions regarding patient care and must exercise professional judgment and decision-making.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Under the direction, supervision, and responsibility of a physician, and in accordance with established policies, the Nurse Practitioner will evaluate the patient's health status through diagnostic procedures and tests.

  • Provides therapeutic patient care under the direction of a physician and in accordance with established protocols.

  • Provide timely and high-quality Otolaryngology consultation services of inpatients at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, and outpatients at the clinic.

  • Service team in completing patient care and administrative tasks; refinement of protocols and monitoring of quality and clinical outcomes towards service improvement; completion of perioperative, order sets, and discharge instructions.

  • Clinic-based evaluation and management of patients with symptoms of sinus conditions.

  • Advanced interpersonal skills to communicate effectively and efficiently with patients, patient's family members, and all interdisciplinary healthcare team members.

  • Able to competently perform (after a period of supervised training) sinus procedures requiring the use of required instruments.

  • Learn and apply knowledge of otolaryngologic conditions and disorders.

  • Can function effectively in a fluid, dynamic, and rapidly changing environment.

  • Self-directed and possesses mature judgment and motivation.

  • Must complete all required HIPAA and other specified online training courses.

  • Will communicate clearly in verbally and in written form.

  • Knowledgeable with Epic electronic medical record system (after a period of training).

  • Scientific writing skills.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • A comprehensive understanding of clinical and/or surgical procedures, patient care procedures, medical protocols, and testing procedures. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, psychology, pharmacology, clinical medicine, radiology, microbiology, and pathology.

  • The analytical ability necessary to evaluate and determine the health status of patients and implement proper care plans.

  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interview, teach, and counsel patients and work in teams with physicians attending, residents, and nursing; instruct health care personnel on procedures and treatment.

  • Ability to analyze and evaluate patient history, physical examination findings, and laboratory values, and make preliminary diagnoses of patients for review by physician.

  • Operates a personal computer and/or laptop to access email, computerized scheduling and documentation databases, and other basic office support software.

Physical Requirements

  • Works in normal patient care areas in Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center.

  • Exposure to hazards due to infectious specimens and contagious diseases, but the potential for harm or personal injury is limited when proper safety and health precautions are followed.

  • Able to concentrate during surgical procedures while assisting the physician.

  • Walk throughout the hospital plan to assess and deliver care to inpatients on all services.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Nursing;

  • Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner.

  • Must be licensed as an NP in the State of Maryland or other states where practicing.

  • Current American Heart or American Red Cross CPR certification required.

  • Must maintain current licensure and certification during the duration of employment.

  • Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to the start date.

  • Additional experience may substitute for a master's degree, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three years of related clinical nursing experience.

  • NP who has experience in care of surgical patients.

  • History of strong organizational skills, analytical skills, customer service skills, clinical sensitivity, medical terminology, excellent computer skills and the ability to multi-task.

  • High level of interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent communication, mathematical computation, spelling, and grammar skills.

  • Knowledge and compliance of HIPAA rules and regulations in the dissemination of patient Protected Health Information (PHI).
