GENERAL DESCRIPTIONAttorney III Performs highly complex (Senior-level) legal work. Work involves overseeing and planninglegal activities, preparing legal documents, interpreting laws and regulations, and rendering legal adviceand counsel to local election officials throughout the State of Texas and to the general public. Maysupervise the work of others. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use ofinitiative and independent judgmentEXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMEDAdvise local election officials, candidates, and the general public on election-related matters bytelephone and in writing.Draft administrative rules for the Texas Register to implement election laws.Draft and track legislation relating to election laws.Conduct election schools and make educational presentations concerning the Texas election laws.Draft and render legal opinions.Confer with and advise interested parties and their attorneys on election-related legal matters.Perform related work as assigned such as preparing handbooks, brochures, and forms.Review election materials translated into Spanish for content and tone, if bilingual.Assist the Office of the Attorney General Office (OAG) in preparing cases for trial. Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor (JD) degree.Member in good standing with the State Bar of Texas. Must be licensed to practice law for a minimumof 6 years with at least 2 years of experience in election law, local government. Law clerk or similarexperience can be counted toward the legal experience. Legal research and writing experience as alicensed attorney.Additionally, this position requires: a resume to be submitted with application; and a writing sample, of no more than 10 pages, must be submitted with the application.LicensureMust currently be licensed to practice law in the State of Texas. Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesThis position requires demonstrated skill in: legal research, writing, and analysis; and use of personal computers, word processing software including Microsoft Word and Excel, andAdobe Acrobat.This position requires demonstrated ability to: analyze complex legal problems and interpret laws and regulations; and communicate legal opinions in an understandable and usable manner; and work cooperatively with others in a professional office environment; and provide excellent customer service; and manage multiple priorities.MINIMUM PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of Texas Election Law.Legislative experience.Experience speaking before a public audience.Ability to speak Spanish Information for Veterans, Reservists, or GuardsmenThe following MOS codes are generally applicable to this position: 15P, 36B, 42A, 56M, 68J, 88H, 88N, 89A, 89B, 92A, 92Y, AZ, LS, MC, PS, RP, SN, YN, 641X, 741X, 360, 018, 0100, 0111, 6046, 0102, 0170, 4430, 3A1X1, 8A200.
