Job Summary and Qualifications

Must be able to demonstrate understanding of HCA’s and St. David’s safety initiatives by strict compliance to all safety protocols and procedures. Establishes and maintains systems to effectively carry out assigned responsibilities. Demonstrates flexibility and creativity in supporting the objectives and operations of the Heart Hospital of Austin. Vested in and demonstrates commitment to the mission and values statement of Heart Hospital of Austin. Must be able to be self-directed and self-initiating in the performance of duties, requiring minimal supervision and direction. Must have excellent interpersonal skills, presenting in a caring and professional demeanor with patients, staff, physicians, providers and the general public in the performance of all duties. Must be able to work with others in an effective manner using a team approach. Must be able to communicate effectively patient and financial information. Must be proficient with medical terminology. Must have good organizational and time management skills and show the ability to prioritize duties. Must have regular, predictable attendance. Must be familiar with computer and word processing software. Demonstrates ability to respond to emergency situations. Demonstrates ability to provide all telephone operations.

  • Interview and recepts incoming patients, his/her relatives, or other responsible individuals to obtain identifying and demographical information with insurance and financial information.

  • Search MPI completely and assign the correct medical record number.

  • Verify insurance benefits and determines pre-certification/authorization status via online or other resources. If pre certification/authorization/notification of admission is required and has not been obtained, initiate via Passport, on-line or phone call. Enter all information and authorization/referral numbers into the registration system.

  • Secure all signatures necessary for treatments, release of medical information, assignment of insurance benefits, and payment of services from legally responsible parties.

  • Understand/explain policies regarding services, pricing, insurance billing, and payment of account. Request full or partial payment for services rendered according to collection policies.

  • Follows all guidelines set forth in the Cash Handling policy. Produce paperwork on each patient for distribution to appropriate departments.

  • Assign Insurance Plans (IPlans) accurately.

  • Notify HIM for any duplicate unit numbers.

  • Activate all pre-registered patients that have reported for service.

  • Welcomes patient and family members in a professional manner. Contact the nursing staff for emergency medical needs and answer patient and visitor questions.

  • Answers telephone in a timely and professional manner.

  • Serves as point of contact for initiation of appropriate emergency communication procedures and alarm signals such as fire, bomb threat, weather threat, missing baby or patient, disasters, and cardiac arrest. Shows thorough knowledge of all code/alarm procedures.

  • Develops and maintains effective relations with referring physicians and their office staff

  • Communicates with the physician’s offices to obtain clinical information

  • Provides feedback and follow through with responses to questions that arise from physicians and their office staff.

  • Establish and maintains long-term customer relations, building trust and respect by consistently meeting and exceeding expectations.

  • Answers any questions and explains policies clearly.

  • Provides assistance, guidance and direction to patients, visitors and physicians.

  • Interview patients at workstation to obtain all necessary account information.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

EDUCATION REQUIRED

High School Diploma or GED
