Serves as an Arrest and Control Tactics (ACT) Instructor, planning and conducting classroom, laboratory, and/or field instruction sessions as part of the ACT training program for the development of the trooper trainees as well as the continuing education for the Departments commissioned officers and civilian staff, federal agents, and military personnel. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Provide instruction and training in areas of control tactics such as striking, mobility, takedowns, grappling, and ground tactics for the development of the Trooper Trainees as well as continuing education for the incumbent, partner agencies, military personnel, and non-commissioned personnel. 2. Monitor the progress of students, document their results, and/or recommend remedial and corrective action. Create and conduct specialized remedial training to address control tactics deficiencies identified in a group and/or specific individuals. 3. Oversee the development and revision of program/course materials in control tactics instruction. 4. Assist in conducting research on emerging technology, best practices, techniques and procedures to enhance instructional knowledge and skill. 5. Perform significant administrative duties that support the ACT training program. 6. Participate in committees overseeing training and academic learning objectives, standards, and requirements. 7. Disseminate information and provide assistance, resolve issues, clarify procedures, and coordinate training support requirements. 8. Train consistently, maintains proficiency, and maintains all equipment in proper condition. 9. May coordinate, plan, assign and/or supervise the work of others. 10. Attend work regularly and observes approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies. 11. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications: GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS: Education High School Diploma/equivalent is required. Experience Five (5) years of coaching combative/martial arts in the private sector and at least one (1) year of regulated amateur/professional fighting experience, or one (1) years f coaching combative/martial arts in the private sector with five (5) years of regulated amateur/professional fighting experience, or ten (10) years of regulated amateur/professional fighting experience. Substitution Note: A combination of six (6) years of formal instruction/training or experience as an instructor in military or law enforcement combative training may substitute for the required experience. Licensure and/or Certification Must have or obtain within one (1) year of employment a Basic Instructor Course Certification issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement and the Texas DPS Arrest and Control Tactics Instructor Program (pass ACT Instructor proficiency tests with 90% or above score). Must possess a valid driver license from state of residence. Must successfully pass and maintain Departments standard physical readiness test (PRT) at 90% or above. Regulatory Knowledge Working knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly assimilate information related to TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures. Interpersonal Skills Must demonstrate an ability to exercise poise, tact, diplomacy and an ability to establish and maintain positive, working/professional relationships with internal/external customers. Analytical Reasoning/Attention to Detail Must demonstrate an ability to examine data/information, discern variations/similarities, and be able identify trends, relationships and causal factors, as well as grasp issues, draw accurate conclusions, and solve problems. Technology Proficiency with Microsoft Office and appropriate levels of proficiency with utilized software and systems (e.g. CAPPS, SharePoint) and be able to learn new software/systems. Confidentiality and Protected Information Must demonstrate an ability to responsibly handle sensitive and confidential information and situations and adhere to applicable laws/statutes/policies related to access, maintenance and dissemination of information.
