DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:

This position is only open to Colorado state residents.

This position is covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins).

New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

DESCRIPTION OF JOB:

About the Position

The Colorado Department of Transportation has a vacancy for a Heavy Equipment Mechanic that is based out of our equipment shop in Aurora. This position provides skilled, professional, quality mechanic services for a wide range of CDOT equipment in the Metro Denver area.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Diagnoses and repairs vehicle and equipment malfunctions on all major systems including gas and diesel engines; transmissions; transfer cases; differentials; drivelines; brakes; carburetors; tires and wheels; hydraulic, steering and suspension systems; electrical and cooling systems; computer-controlled sanders; liquid de-icing systems; and AVL systems such as network fleet- running systems. Overhauls and rebuilds components such as rebuild components of engines, fuel systems, exhaust systems, and emission systems. Diagnoses equipment components for defects or malfunctions, utilizing a wide range of test equipment. Works on vehicles and equipment such as 3.5-ton single axle and 10-ton tandem axle, tractor-trailers, front end loaders, motor graders, asphalt paving machines, and 15' mower tractors. Performs preventive maintenance, annual safety inspections, general inspections, pre-trip and post-trip inspections as required by the Federal DOT and CDOT.

Orders and procures parts, supplies, and materials to keep equipment functional. Tracks equipment maintenance and repair utilizing appropriate software and keeps Federal DOT Inspection records on all equipment. Designs and fabricates parts and special tools needed for unique or emergency situations by machining, arc welding, and cutting with oxygen-propylene or plasma cutter; apply knowledge of different metals and alloys as well as different welding rods and their applications.

Sets up new equipment by means of fabricating or modifying to CDOT specifications for special needs and uses.

Processes equipment notifications and annual and emissions inspections. Prioritizes assignments and ensure the shop is maintained in a clean, safe, and organized manner.

Uses computers with various software applications for data input, records management, and e-mail in support of job assignments.

Continuously learns nd develops job knowledge and skills through on-the-job training and training courses both online and in person. Maintains technical knowledge of equipment, tools, and materials, and adapts to any changes, updates, and any technology improvements.

Instructs operators in the use and care of vehicles and equipment. Keeps tools, equipment, and work area clean, organized, and in good working condition. Maintain current knowledge of and abide by all safety laws, regulations, policies, and procedures and wear all required personal protective equipment. Other job duties as assigned.
