SMX is seeking a skilled Mid-Level Software Engineer to join our dynamic team who demonstrates a strong willingness to learn, excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to work autonomously, and a commitment to continuous improvement. This role will focus on data science, building geospatial applications, integrating geospatial datasets, and leveraging AWS services. The Global Open-Source Threat Network Disruption Cell (“GOST Cell”) utilizes publicly available information (PAI), non-traditional intelligence gathering and exploitation methods to provide our customers with insight to counter counterdrug (CD) and counter trans-national organized crime (CTOC). The GOST Cell utilizes commercial subscriptions, social media, financial transactions, and open-sourced geospatial data to identify, disrupt, and interdict trans-national threat networks responsible for illicit drug trafficking, illicit financial flows, and the illicit trafficking of people, wildlife, natural resources, and weapons.
This position requires the ability to obtain a DoD security clearance which requires US citizenship for work on DoD contracts.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Design and implement geospatial application solutions, integrating with AWS services such as Location Services, EC2, S3, and Redshift
Develop scalable architectures and workflows to process and visualize datasets from various sources
Build interactive mapping and analysis tools using geospatial libraries and platforms, such as Mapbox and ArcGIS
Collaborate with analysts and stakeholders to create user-friendly applications supporting open-source intelligence
Automate and optimize workflows to streamline data collection and integration into operational processes
Apply expertise in Python for data processing, leveraging libraries such as Polars
Support the integration of geospatial applications with external APIs and data sources to enrich analytical capabilities
Leverage DevOps tools, such as Docker, to ensure scalable, efficient deployments
Implement and maintain monitoring solutions to ensure high availability and rapid issue resolution
Perform root cause analysis to improve system reliability and identify opportunities for enhancement
Required Skills & Experience
Proficiency in processing and visualizing geospatial data
Ability to integrate geospatial APIs and datasets into applications
Proficiency in Python for data processing and analysis
Experience with data storage solutions: PostgreSQL, Redshift, or no-SQL databases
Ability to automate data workflows and optimize large-scale data pipelines
Familiarity with Docker for containerized application deployment
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work with stakeholders, analysts, and team members
Strong problem-solving skills with a commitment to continuous improvement
Experience in working with RESTful APIs for integrating external data sources
Ability to automate workflows for data collection, integration, and analysis
Familiarity with version control tools such as Git/GitHub
Desired Skills & Experience
Hands-on experience with Mapbox, ArcGIS, or similar geospatial libraries
Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform
Experience gathering requirements to build user-friendly, data-driven applications
Experience with Agile work supported by Jira Software

The proposed salary for this position is:
$93,800—$156,400 USD
