Forensic Quality Assurance Manager – Maine CDC in Augusta, ME

This position will serve as the Quality Assurance Manager (Chemist III) of the Forensic Chemistry Section of the Maine DHHS Health and Environmental Testing Laboratory (HETL) and assist the Forensic Technical Director in ensuring adherence to ISO 17025 accreditation standards for all processes.

1. Knowledge, Skills and Certifications

Specific qualifications needed to perform the job including, necessary licenses, knowledge, skills, education, experience, training, and technical skills.

• At least a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biology, or Forensic Science with at least six years experience in an analytical laboratory

• Experience working in a forensic testing laboratory

• Experience working in an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory

• Previous supervisory experience preferred

• Experience working with quality assurance and control practices and procedures, including but not limited to, audits, proficiency tests, corrective actions and document control

• Experience performing validations

• Experience using advanced analytical instrumentation, including but not limited to GC/MS, FTIR and LC-MS/MS

• The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of internal and external partners

• Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills

• Experience testifying in a court of law

• Computer skills, including Microsoft Office, LIMS system(s), and instrumentation software

1. Duties and Deliverable (Outline of specific job duties)

Specific duties required of the resource, as well as any expected deliverables, including necessary travel expectations.

This position will serve as the Quality Assurance Manager of the Forensic Chemistry Section of HETL. Primary responsibilities include: scheduling and ordering of proficiency tests, reviewing proficiency test results, scheduling and performing annual internal audits, monitoring QC data from all test methods, reviewing chemical inventories, reviewing and approving incoming reagents, documenting deviations, incident reports, and corrective actions, performing root cause analysis, scheduling vendors for annual maintenance and calibrations, reviewing and approving calibration certificates following instrument calibrations, performing the annual uncertainty of measurement calculation for each discipline, managing annual review of policies, scheduling ongoing continuing education sessions, and review of validations of new instruments and methods. Position may also be required to testify.

1. Schedule

Summary of work schedule, including normal working hours, on-call expectations, allowed time off (which is non-billable), ability to work remote.

This job is scheduled for 40 hours per week. Normal working hours are between 8 am and 5 pm, weekdays. There is currently limited ability to work remotely.
