Zurich North America (ZNA) is seeking a Vice President and Senior Actuary for Zurich E&S, ZNA’s independent business division servicing the excess and surplus lines industry. The Senior Actuary is a new position that will be responsible for working with the Zurich E&S Executive Leadership Team to conduct actuarial research and analysis, coordinate actuarial services across the broader ZNA actuarial function, provide business insights and provide transactional support to Zurich E&S underwriters.

The role will be responsible for leading Zurich E&S’s analysis of strategic and tactical business initiatives, developing enhanced measures of portfolio performance, monitoring portfolio health, researching various questions related to actuarial positions on pricing and reserving and developing insights to better understand E&S portfolio returns. The Senior Actuary is expected to act with a high degree of independence and be able to inform and influence colleagues across ZNA in support of fact-based analyses. The Senior Actuary also will be expected to support, interact and communicate with the highest levels of Zurich E&S and ZNA leadership and must possess very strong technical actuarial skills and excellent communication skills.

Specific and recurring functions and skills for this role include:

  • Coordinating and developing the annual Country Underwriting Plan (CUP)

  • Supporting the Zurich E&S Head of Finance in the development of the Annual Financial Plan and business outlooking process

  • Developing, implementing and monitoring the annual Tiering plan

  • Perform an independent top-down analysis and assessment of reserving and underwriting methodology and approaches for Zurich E&S

  • Coordinate the actuarial sections in Virtuous Circle & AvE discussions

  • Identify specific targeted deep dive analyses on reserves, pricing and underwriting risk

  • Identifying and developing data driven insights to improve underwriting performance through the delivery of information or models, including the development of account scoring models

  • Lead analyses related to tracking and improving portfolio performance

  • Coordinating the calibration and updating of pricing models for underwriters

  • Lead the development and implementation of effective pricing/rating structures

  • Collaborate with Market Facing Underwriters on individual account pricing decisions

  • Remain current with market trends and apply this knowledge in portfolio management

  • Ensure data, methodology and processes used in analyses are such that the output meets required quality standards to be consistent and accepted

  • Support the E&S Leadership Team on ad hoc actuarial projects as needed

The new position reports to the Head of Underwriting for Zurich E&S. The rolecan be a located in Schaumburg, IL, New York, NY or Atlanta, GA. Flexible work arrangements may be available. Some travel may be required.

Candidate Requirements Include:

  • Bachelors Degree and 10 or more years of experience in the Actuarial area plus FCAS or equivalent international

certification

OR

  • Bachelors Degree and 15 or more years of experience in the Actuarial area plus ACAS or equivalent international

certification

Preferred Candidate Requirements:

  • Excellent communication skills including translating robust analysis into concise and understandable presentations

  • Demonstrated excellence in influencing others

  • Solid project management and organizational skills to work on multiple priorities, establish and meet deadlines

  • Knowledge of surplus lines markets, products and pricing approaches

  • Experience with rating plans and portfolio metrics related to Property, Casualty and Financial Lines

  • Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and knowledge of statistical analysis software

  • Demonstrated ability to leverage data and technology to drive outcomes

Compensation for roles at Zurich varies depending on a wide array of factors including but not limited to the specific office location, role, skill set, and level of experience. Other rewards may include short term incentive bonuses and merit increases. Candidates with salary expectations outside of the range are encouraged to apply, and will be considered based on experience, skill, and education. The salary provided is a nationwide market range and has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location where the position may be filled. The starting salary range for this position is $168,400 - $275,800.
