Position Summary

In support of Morehouse School of Medicine’s Vision, “Leading the creation and advancement of health equity,” the Department of Surgery is seeking a Burn Surgeon to join their team.

The Department of Surgery at Morehouse School of Medicine is seeking an Assistant, Associate, or Professor who is board-certified or board-eligible in general or plastic surgery and critical care.

The successful candidate will provide comprehensive surgical care for patients suffering from burns and related injuries. This includes initial assessment, developing treatment plans, performing surgical procedures, and overseeing post-operative care and rehabilitation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a burn attending for the Division of Emory Surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital, reporting to the Medical Director, Walter Ingram Burn Center

  • Contribute and assist in the preparation for all regulatory site visits, participate in regular burn operational meetings, foster further teamwork and a collaborative culture on the unit, and partner with Department and Hospital leadership on burn unit resources.

  • Provide clinical coverage in the Burn ICU , OR, floor and burn clinics at Grady Memorial Hospital.

  • Participate in burn call 5-10 times a month, much of which will be done as home call.

  • Schedule may be adjusted depending on practice need

  • Evaluate and treat inpatients and outpatients with acute burn injuries, smoke inhalation injuries, and related trauma.

  • Oversee ambulatory burn patient care, including new patient consults and follow- ups.

  • Perform surgical procedures such as escharotomies, debridement, skin grafting, scar revision, and reconstructive surgery related to burn injuries.

  • Coordinate interdisciplinary care by working collaboratively with the burn team.

  • Maintain cleanliness of work area and equipment to comply with established infection control and department protocols.

  • Engage in teaching and mentoring activities for medical students, residents, and fellows, fostering their professional development and knowledge in burn/critical surgery.

  • Participate in departmental meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and ongoing professional development activities.

  • Conduct clinical research and/or produce scholarship funding related to burn and surgical critical care.

  • Provide in-house on-call coverage.

Academic and Scholarship:

  • In keeping with the Morehouse School of Medicine guidelines for appointment, promotion, and tenure, you are expected to participate in teaching which may include occasional lectures, small group and bedside teaching, preceptorship, and mentorship.

  • Participate in committees, peer review, present cases in the Grady case conferences, manage patient workups and procedures according to departmental guidelines, and adopt any tools and/or technologies deemed part of the program.

  • Develop academic and research interests, contribute to the field and work on publishing at least 2-3 peer reviewed papers a year.

  • Meet with the Chair of Surgery two times each year to formally discuss progress and performance.

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree from an accredited medical school.

  • Experience or interest in teaching students and residents.

  • Board certification or board eligibility in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care

  • Eligibility for medical licensure in the state of Georgia.

  • Eligibility for DEA license in the state of Georgia.

  • Fellowship training in Burn Surgery from an accredited program.

  • Strong academic background with a track record of research publications and presentations in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
