THE JOB:

The Broadcast & IT Field Engineer is tasked with timely and professional technical support in a fast paced 24x7x365 field newsgathering/production environment. Individuals in this job have fully demonstrated the skills, knowledge and competencies necessary to set up and operate a satellite news gathering ("SNG") truck, setting up video streaming hardware, perform quality control and maintenance and repair of all television remote broadcast and/or satellite transmission and receiving equipment, as well as performing general hardware and software support for local computing equipment (e.g. laptops, LAN connection, digital phones) on site.

This position requires proficient electronics and IT support skills. Travel often on short notice is required and the ability to physically lift and move equipment weighing 50 pounds or more may be necessary. Willingness to perform varied tasks when required on assignment to support the production. Ability to adapt to rapidly changing situations frequently encountered in field remote environments. Excellent customer service and communication skills (verbal, written) required.

This position will primarily provide field support but will also spend time in-house, or assisting Broadcast and IT teams with project and maintenance work when not otherwise deployed in field.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operate a satellite truck and/or portable satellite, microwave and streaming equipment to provide multi-path transmissions (IP/Video/Audio) from outside broadcast locations. This includes equipment transport, set-up, operation and breakdown and may also include truck maintenance. CNN & contracted SNG trucks / Newsgathering vehicles are multi-path mobile production platforms thus requiring one to be well versed in the operation and maintenance of on-board systems such as cameras, switchers, routers, encoders, RF and specialized transmission gear (MIMO, COFDM, bonded cellular). (50%)

  • Perform 24x7x365 broadcast technical support to include installation, maintenance and troubleshooting/repair of sophisticated streaming, audio and video remote broadcast production/television equipment. This includes equipment at Production Centers, Bureaus, and outside broadcast locations, as well as ENG crew gear. Coordinate technical installation with vendors and/or production teams. (30%)

  • May act in a lead (Engineer-in-Charge) technical role while on remote or project assignment. Must demonstrate versatility and willingness to perform varied tasks as required on field assignments which may include operating video/audio equipment. Demonstrated expertise in analyzing and solving complex technical problems and be able work independently and autonomously in a team based environment. (15%)

  • Document quality standards, system anomalies, operational procedures, reference materials (Electrical, Conceptual drawings) and project work material as applicable. (5%)

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Typically 4 or more years of experience in radio and/or in television, including troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of TV, radio equipment, IT systems, satellite, production servers and studio systems; IP streaming systems, file ingest systems and quality control.

  • Multi-cameras field-based production experience

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to travel on International remote assignments and ability to travel on short notice for extended and potentially intermediate time periods

  • Willingness to learn Turner/CNN proprietary equipment and to facilitate repairs on field equipment while on assignment.

  • Ability to coordinate and communicate well with others to get the work done.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • 4 year technical degree, preferably electronics (or equivalent education/experience/training)

  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer and data networking hardware and applications to ensure complete technical support in the field.

  • A Certified Driver's License ("CDL") in order to operate the satellite truck or able to obtain one within a year.
