The Assistant Director of Formation Communities is responsible for providing leadership and program administration for Candler’s Formation Communities program. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Worship and Spiritual Formation, the Assistant Director will work closely with faculty, staff, and students at Candler and Emory to foster growth, engagement, and support within our formation communities.

In collaboration with the Associate Dean of Worship and Spiritual Formation, the Assistant Director will develop and offer creative support to this program. Duties include strategic development and program management, which currently includes seven residential student communities, and three non-residential communities. This position will interact closely with a range of internal and external stakeholders, including Candler students, faculty, and staff, church and community leaders, and property managers and owners.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists in directing the strategic planning, development, and implementation of programs.

  • Represents the organization at meetings, conferences and other events.

  • May develop and present speeches or presentations to generate or enhance awareness of program(s).

  • Provides technical support by evaluating established processes, conducting training, attending operational meetings and networking with affiliated groups.

  • Monitors progress toward achieving established objectives and deadlines.

  • Participates in planning, administering and monitoring program related budgets.

  • Conducts research, designs new initiatives, and collaborates with others to ensure program(s) remain viable.

  • May serve on, hold office in, or chair committees.

  • May write publishable articles and papers.

  • May supervise staff.

  • Oversees or assists in developing operational and statistical reports for management and regulatory agencies.

  • Ensures required records and documentation are maintained.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

Program Development and Management:

  • Administering the annual application process by designing and distributing promotional material, scheduling informational meetings, and working with other Candler offices (Communications, Student Life, and Admissions) to distribute information.

  • Coordinating the application review team and lead the student participant selection process.

  • Developing work plans to accomplish program goals and objectives and monitor progress toward their achievement.

  • Developing and refining program activities that support the goals and mission of the Formation Communities program.

  • Implementing strategies to enhance engagement and participation among formation community members and the larger community of Candler School of Theology.

  • Developing and coordinating program-related meetings and retreats and manage logistical requirements for such programming (i.e. reserving space, ordering food, and disbursing honoraria).

  • Recruiting faculty and others from the wider community to serve as house chaplains.

  • Working closely with house rectors and house chaplains throughout the academic year to ensure the smooth running of the formation communities.

  • Supervising student workers related to the work of the formation communities.

  • Monitoring and evaluate the effectiveness of programs and initiatives, through regular evaluation of the program, and gathering feedback and data to inform future planning and improvements.

Financial Management:

  • Maintaining the program budget by managing expenditures and the budget planning process and preparing financial reports.

  • Processing financial reimbursements and facilitate the hiring and payment of house chaplains and rectors.

  • Preparing operational and statistical reports.

Administrative Coordination:

  • Managing the coordination and communication with all formation community rectors, house chaplains, and student participants.

  • Developing promotional materials, newsletters, annual reports, and other written information related to the program.

  • Maintaining a program calendar and keep records for program participants.

  • Responding to student inquiries about the program as well as working with Candler’s Chief Business Officer to resolve property issues as they emerge.

  • Identifying potential properties for possibilities of formation communities’ growth.

  • Scheduling and facilitating annual cleaning of each house during the summer.

  • Performing related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a field related to the program(s) and five years of program related experience, OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree, preferably in theological related field.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.

  • Strong ability to interact with students, staff, and faculty at all levels. Professional experience in student affairs is desirable.

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate, inspire, and empower others.

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to achieve common goals.

  • Wide knowledge of educational policies and procedures.

  • Formal theological training and/or experience with residential intentional community is a plus.

  • Ability to initiate projects and creative proposals as a self-starter who values and seeks collaboration.

  • Exceptional organizational and project management skills, with the ability to multitask and prioritize effectively.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and experience with database management software or online platforms for community engagement, as well as file sharing software, such as OneDrive.

  • Familiarity with programs of theological education, the mission of Candler School of Theology, and the church.

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
