Position Responsibilities

Accounting Associates work in our dynamic Expenditure Accounting group and support a broad set of operational accounting functions across the company. As an Associate, you will join a diverse team of experienced professionals and be assigned to one of our four functional departments: Accounts Payable, Capital Accounting, Payroll, and Miscellaneous Billing. Examples of position responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Assist in monthly close process and support various scheduled and ad hoc reporting requirements.

  • Create data sets through technology tools and applications to develop data-driven insights into business results and accounting practices at Norfolk Southern.

  • Utilize analytical tools to identify trends and opportunities for process improvement within departments.

  • Review and reconcile general ledger accounts to support compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, corporate policy, internal controls, and all regulatory requirements.

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal business partners.

  • Review business transactions and coordinate with management concerning discrepancies.

  • Develop full understanding of end-to-end business processes related to assigned department.

  • Provide comprehensive updates to the management team and related stakeholders regarding departmental assignments.

Qualifications & Skills

Education

  • Required: Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree

  • Preferred Degree Paths: Accounting, Finance, or other Business curriculum

Job Related Experience

  • 0-2 years of relevant work experience

Technical Skills

  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office

Soft Skills

  • A self-starter committed to seeking opportunities to learn about the rail industry and accounting practices.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Exceptional customer service skills

  • Ability to manage time, plan, and prioritize work demands effectively

Compensation

Starting pay for an Accounting Associate is $66,000. Eligible for pay increase upon promotion.

Travel Required: 0-3 Days per Month
