About our opportunity:
The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the full-time position of Lead Heavy Equipment Operator within the Public Works Department, Stormwater Division. This position requires the operation of multiple types of heavy motorized equipment to remove and haul debris and other items to and from City facilities. Responsibilities include operating heavy equipment including but not limited to: backhoes, track hoes, loaders, dump trucks, bulldozers, motor graders, compressors, etc. Work includes driving equipment and assisting with various departmental projects.
What you’ll be doing:
Operates a variety of heavy motorized equipment involved in the construction and maintenance of City Stormwater infrastructure and City Streets, including but not limited too, trackhoes, backhoes, skid steers, front end loaders, dump trucks, motor graders, compactors, etc .
Transports equipment from location to location.
Performs rough and fine grading, trench digging, ditch digging and clean out, loading dirt and debris, installing stormwater infrastructure, using a trackhoe, skid steer, backhoe, or motor grader.
Performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment, such as checking and filling fluid levels and greasing as necessary.
Inspects equipment daily and reports need for repairs; assists in repair work.
Trains less-experienced Equipment Operators in operation of various types of equipment as workload and time permit.
Performs a variety of manual or semi-skilled labor in conjunction with stormwater construction and maintenance projects.
Performs related work as required.
Operates dump truck with spreader & plow during winter weather events.
This position is considered an indirect supervisory position in that it is required to fill in for the Crew Supervisor in the supervisor's absence.
Supplemental Functions:
Performs other similar duties as required.

What you Bring:
We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered:
High School Diploma or equivalency (GED)
Minimum of three (3) years of experience operating equipment such as a tractor, skid steer, track hoe/excavator, loader, dump truck, trench roller, tamp or similar.
Minimum of three (3) years of related experience in construction trades, including but not limited to drainage installation, ditches, paving, roadways, sidewalks, etc. is required.
Licensing:
- Valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B with ability to obtain Class A with Tanker Endorsement within 90 days of hire).

Hiring Rate: $23.29 -$24.46
Full Salary Range: $23.29 - $34.94
