Southern Company Metal Fabrication Production Manager in Asheboro, North Carolina

Summary

Leads production activities in various work centers (3 or more) in a way that ensures safety, quality, cost, and on time delivery goals are met. Manages a group of Work Centers and disciplines, monitoring on-time and quality performance and promoting operational discipline. Work Center management across various disciplines and focuses with in manufacturing. Lead manufacturing driven projects and initiatives in a cross functional setting as a result of data review or customer feedback. Responsible for developing personnel to achieve forecast and develop P/E. Ensures Methods of Manufacture (MoM’s) and Manufacturing Assembly Instructions (MAI’s) are followed. Identifies costs savings opportunities and works as a member of the production leadership team to implement Continuous Improvement efforts. Manage the internal operations of the Fabrication departments ensuring adherence to best practices and principles of metal fabrication industries.

Qualification Requirements

This position works in various production disciplines ensuring achievement of production metrics across each work center and continued development of the teams. Review overall departmental metrics developing corrective and preventative actions from the data. To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to achieve each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or 5+ years of related work experience.

  • 4+ years of direct supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment.

  • Six-Sigma and/or Lean Manufacturing Certified, or actively pursuing.

  • Ability to lead various disciplines within a manufacturing environment.

  • Demonstrated competency with an ERP system utilized in a manufacturing environment (IFS or SAP preferred).

  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and documentation - such as schematics, assembly drawings, operational manuals, safety rules, and standardized work instructions.

  • Ability to compile data and reports for communicating performance versus goals (on-time, quality levels, etc.).

  • Drive Safety, Quality and Productivity improvement initiatives throughout operation.

  • Work with HR on personnel development, performance reviews, and HR initiatives.

  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) from the American Welding Society (AWS) with the ability to train co-workers preferred.

  • 2+ years’ experience working as a CWI or similar position preferred.

  • Prior experience writing and modifying Welding Procedure Specifications preferred.

  • Prior experience certifying welders and developing a qualification process preferred.

  • 2+ years’ experience working with robotic arc welders and automated technology preferred.

  • Experience in robotic arc welder cell startups and process implementation preferred.

  • Experience operating and programing/setup on CNC equipment with the ability to train operators (Press brakes, plasma tables, saw, shear etc..).

  • Knowledgeable in plate processing procedures, heavy welding processes and their best practices.

  • Knowledgeable in structural steel processing and material handling best practices.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Work cross functionally across various departments in a wide range of settings

  • Solid understanding of best practices for Corrective Action/Preventative action exercises.

  • Ability to lead projects and initiatives in a cross functional setting to drive quick results.

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and scheduling software.

  • Efficiently communicate on-time, quality, safety, and improvement initiatives to manufacturing leadership.

  • Understand production process and how they relate to production schedules and due dates.

  • Interface with engineering to ensure design questions or clarifications are answered quickly and clearly to minimize production delays.

  • Effective Problem Solving. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Experience in a Lean Manufacturing environment is preferred.

  • Experienced with ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle or IFS.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Direct management of manufacturing work centers in varied disciplines and focuses. Responsible for cost, safety, quality and schedule. Direct management responsibility for both Supervisors and Team Leads. May also have direct supervision over support roles and functions in manufacturing.

Essential Functions

  • Works with HR on personnel development, actively involved in performance reviews and career goals of the team.

  • Drives various improvement initiatives stemming from Safety, Quality and Productivity data.

  • Works cross functionally with various departments on a wide range of initiatives.

  • Manages multiple work centers in various disciplines ranging from 35 – 80 people.

  • Monitors labor hour allotment to jobs and track/trend performance versus goals. Manages assembly to ensure total labor hours do not exceed targets.

  • Works directly with other departments leaders to ensure all metrics are achieved.

  • Works together with other Supervisors and Production Managers to ensure production capacity is efficiently scheduled and utilized to meet planned shipment dates without compromising quality.

  • Reviews PTO (paid time off) requests. Approves/Rejects based on his/her team’s production goals and deadlines.

  • Ensures transactions in ERP system (IFS) match and align with the physical work – in terms of scope and timing.

  • Monitors and approves attendance clocking’s and manufacturing clocking’s in IFS before required deadline. Resolves any discrepancies in clocking hours and/or allocations to shop orders.

  • Creates and/or distributes corrective actions (disciplinary, training, processes/procedures) within their team.

  • Inspects products manufactured with in his/her teams ensuring compliance with engineering documents.

  • Helps drive and implement 5S and other lean initiatives in manufacturing.

Physical Demands

This position will require standing, stooping, bending, and limited lifting of up to 50lbs.

Work Environment

Typical work environment will be conditioned space. Limited local travel may be required that will change the work environment. This is an active manufacturing setting; at times it will be noisy, and equipment will be moving.
