Description
Job Title: Deputy Controller
My client is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Deputy Controller to join their finance team. In this key role, you will work closely with the Controller to oversee financial operations, ensuring accurate reporting, compliance, and the continuous improvement of processes. The Deputy Controller will provide leadership in daily accounting functions, manage critical financial processes, and contribute to policy and systems development to support New America’s growth.

Key Responsibilities:
Daily Accounting Operations:
Lead daily accounting activities, including account analysis, reconciliations, accounts payable/receivable, and general ledger entries, in collaboration with the Controller.
Monitor expense and credit card reports to ensure compliance with the organization’s travel and expense policy.
Serve as the primary backup for payroll management and processing.
Financial Reporting and Compliance:
Oversee the revenue recognition process and ensure accurate application of cash receipts.
Support the preparation of financial statements and accompanying schedules for monthly close activities.
Execute monthly, quarterly, and year-end close procedures while collaborating with teams to address anomalies.
Manage compliance with local, state, federal, and international tax filings and regulatory requirements.
Financial Operations Oversight:
Oversee accounts payable, bank reconciliations, cash management, and general ledger accuracy.
Ensure timely and consistent payments, reports, and reimbursements.
Conduct quarterly reconciliations between the General Ledger and Salesforce data.
Process Improvement and Policy Development:
Partner with the Controller and Senior Director of Finance to optimize accounting procedures, address inefficiencies, and lead improvement initiatives.
Develop and implement financial policies and systems to scale operations in line with organizational growth.
Maintain and update the Accounting Manual to align with best practices and ensure compliance.
Leadership and Team Development:
Manage, mentor, and support entry level accounting staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
Contribute to team scalability and development as the organization grows.
Other Duties:
Perform additional duties as assigned based on organizational needs or evolving priorities.
Requirements
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred, with 7–10 years of directly relevant experience.
Alternatively, 10+ years of progressively responsible financial management or accounting experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
CPA, CMA, or equivalent certifications highly desired.
Technical Skills:
Extensive experience with all core accounting functions.
Proficiency in accounting software and advanced Excel skills (e.g., pivot tables, VLOOKUPS).
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
Competencies:
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
Strong attention to detail and critical thinking skills.
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments effectively.
Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to thrive in a dynamic environment.
Compensation and Benefits:
Annual salary range: $110,000–$120,000, based on experience.
Comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision coverage; a generous retirement plan; paid time off; observance of all federal holidays; and an office-wide closure between Christmas and New Year’s.
