Job Summary

The College of Nursing and Health Innovation (CONHI) at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), seeks a statistician/biostatistician for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Graduate Nursing. We welcome applications from innovative scholars with a commitment to outstanding graduate education in statistics/biostatistics and who desire to teach, conduct research for publication in journals, collaborate on research projects and grants, and provide professional statistical guidance and support to faculty and students with research projects and grant activities.

Candidates with an active research program and external funding are strongly desired.

Successful candidates will be expected to identify areas giving rise to particular methodological challenges, search the (bio)statistical literature to generate solutions to those challenges, articulate methodological limitations, and propose avenues for methodological innovation.

The candidate will join a nationally recognized team and will collaborate with internal and external investigators in the design and implementation of research studies, interpretation of results, manuscript and presentation preparation, and dissemination of findings. Opportunities for collaboration in conducting research include patient safety, aging, early interventions for children, pain management, community-based interventions for vulnerable populations, cardiovascular health, muscle and bone health disease, and health disparities, among other areas. Collaboration with colleagues in other colleges and departments are common. We foster and support interdisciplinary research and education.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to join a growing faculty and to build our academic and research programs in the college and university. The selected candidate will receive a faculty appointment in the Department of Graduate Nursing, tenured or tenure-track at the academic level commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design studies, determine what data to collect, analyze data, interpret results, and collaborate in writing articles to disseminate research findings.

  • Identify areas giving rise to particular methodological challenges, search the (bio)statistical literature to generate solutions to those challenges, articulate methodological limitations, and propose avenues for methodological innovation.

  • Develops statistical programs for data manipulation and implementation of standard and advanced statistical methodology.

  • Advises and guides all statistical aspects of a research project, collaborates with project leader, principal investigator, other clinical investigators, and external government or industry representatives to affect significant decisions regarding the research project, and to jointly achieve objectives and timelines.

  • Creates timelines for statistical project management.

  • Considers and advises on design options to strengthen research studies.

  • Maximizes data collection protocols.

  • Creates customized data analysis plans and implements best data analyses procedures.

  • Demonstrates excellence in teaching and advising of graduate students in the areas of (bio)statistics.

  • Develops courses that align with expertise and research interests.

  • Performs other tasks including protocol reviews, statistical report generation, and review of statistical literature/research related to research or grant topic.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Statistics, Biostatistics, or related field with major coursework in statistics.

  • Expertise and advanced training in statistical methods for conducting biomedical or nursing science research.

  • Experience as a lead statistician on research projects that have consistently provided high quality end products and peer-reviewed publications.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively on concurrent research projects.

  • Experience writing statistical sections for grant applications.

  • Excellent communication skills with both statistical and non-statistical audiences is vital.

  • Experience working with health-related data, AI, and emerging technologies.

  • Proficient in use of SPSS or similar software, SAS, and Stata.

  • Demonstrated commitment to research, education, and service.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postdoctoral fellowship training

Department Information

The College of Nursing and Health Innovation at UTA is the largest public not-for-profit college of nursing, with online and in-person students. The College is committed to the University’s goal of enhancing academic and research excellence, promoting access to education, student success. The College has 500+ full time and part time faculty and has received 3 National League of Nursing Center of Excellence designations, including a new designation in category “Advancing the Science of Nursing Education”. CONHI has accomplished a tremendous expansion of its profile as a research enterprise.

For FY 2022, the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research ranked CONHI #32 in receipt of NIH funding among Schools of Nursing. In FY 2021/2022, CONHI had active research awards totaling nearly $47.1 Million, including multi-year funding, and over forty active research faculty members. The College has ongoing translational research that includes basic sciences, clinical, applied and community studies in areas such as aging, cardiovascular, cardio-oncology, mental health, women’s health, skeletal muscle, patient safety, rural health, health disparities and vulnerable populations. Additional local resources are also available to UTA researchers.

UTA is part of UT Southwestern’s Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) and participates in a partnership with the Dallas-Fort Worth Federal Statistical Research Data Center that allows approved researchers to access confidential microdata from the Census Bureau and other federal agencies providing a locally available option for accessing restricted versions of datasets available for health studies.
