    Job purpose

    The BorgWarner Arden campus offers two world class technical centers and a cutting-edge manufacturing facility that designs and produces turbos, fan, and fan drive components for the automotive industry. Th e Arden campus offers a multitude of career opportunities and is in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina.

    This position wil l lead software, controls, electrical, and mechatronic system product development oversi ght including providing direction for application design and engineering groups leading d evelopment and qualification of electrical, mechanical, and mechatronic devices targeted for the automotive industry.

    System and component development plus validation leading to system integration for automotive OEM applications meeting appropriate market requirements for functionality, durability, reliability, and cost.

    Key responsibilities

  • Lead a global team of ded icated and talented engineer s with a focus on team and induvial development from both a technical and professional perspective.

  • Budg et proje ctions from a physical cost and resourcing standpoint

  • Maintain accurate team budgeting forecasts

  • Hiring for direct reports and semi-annual performance reviews for direct and indirect reports.

  • Ensure p roject planning for all team projects is created and maintained .

  • Guide project engineers to utilize tools and methods from development workbooks.

  • Guide and mentor team on project management techniques as applied to daily and long-term Product Development advanced, core, and application projects.

  • Lead team to d evelop and implement project tools to optimize project workflow . This includes timing, cost, process, and resource objectives to be documented in workbook templates to drive accountability and overall project success.

  • Lead development and validation of mechatronic and electrical turbocharger components including electric actuators and sensors.

  • Provide “functional expert” knowledge to support various local and global teams: application engineering, test facilities, manufacturing, product quality, purchasing and supply chain . Electronic actuator expert defined from a performance, hardware, and microprocessor software standpoint . This includes the ability to use and interpret basic communication protocols.

  • Lead a team to d evelop and improve analysis methods and simulation tools . Develop component metrics and document best practices and lessons learned. Define functional requirements and map limits of system components.

  • General engineering a bility including understanding free body diagrams by hand and Matlab usage for analytical calculations involving fatigue and lifetime estimations . Understand analysis of components for stress, life, heat transfer, and vibration .

  • Oversee a d evelopment team for new and existing electronic & mechatronic turbocharger actuators technology and support existing released component s for performance, reliability, and durability requirements . Approve customer requirement specifications with respect to generic component validation and associated risk assessments including new validation requirements .

  • Review Electronic and Mechatronic technical analysis, including performance, hardware, and microprocessor software . This includes the ability to use and interpret CAN and PWM communication.

  • Ensure the validation process of electrical or mechatronic turbocharger components and/or assemblies used in gas and diesel engine applications is followed

  • Review and approve validation test requirements, specifications, plans, and qualification reports for team owned component .

  • Liaise with customers to resolve immediate product quality and determine future product requirements . Document requirements in component and assembly specifications.

  • Lead teams for Root Cause Analysis for any mechatronic or electrical product design or quality issues occurring before and after start of production . This includes coordination with test facilities for schedule and type of testing.

  • Drive suppliers to implement corrective action and develop future component improvements .

  • Lead DFMEA and DVP&R activities.

    What we’re looking for

    Required :

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechatronics, or Electrical Engineering . With 10 + years of design and development experience with automotive or industrial mechatronic systems.

  • Self-starter with the ability to organize and lead teams and in a dynamic environment.

  • Ability to continuously d evelop high performing teams in a global environment with a n encouraging and positive mindset .

  • Mentorship & or direct supervisory experience

  • Fundamental sound electrical and mecha tronic engineering knowledge with the ability to adapt to new environments.

  • B ackground in product design, development, validation, and/or testing .

  • Strong Project Management skills including the ability to demonstrate logical analysis and clear communication.

  • Ability to create and coordinate engineering development cohesively with teams and individuals in multiple locations / time zones.

  • Ability to manage suppliers and external resources when procuring development hardware or developing new processes.

  • An understanding of mechatronic devices including microcontroller hardware and software, communication interfaces, DC motors; electronic motor drives, servo mechanisms (gears, linkages), and sensors.

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with ability to direct testing .

  • Familiarity with electrical test equipment including oscilloscopes, power analyzers , and multimeters as well as a basic understanding of electrical safety.

  • Ability to works with project teams as the key technical representative and possesses good communication skills .

  • Experience writing technical statements of work (SOW).

  • Proficient with Microsoft office products — Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.

    Preferred :

  • Master of Science with 1 5 + years of development and/or design with automotive or industrial mechatronic devices.

  • U nderstanding of the challenges of applying electronic components to engine-compartment applications, principal failure modes, means to mitigate these, and the methods for validation.

  • U nderstanding of automotive quality process .

  • Experience leading a team of engineers in a global environment.

  • Experience with electronics, electric motors, engines, or turbochargers .

  • Knowledge of fundamentals of internal combustion engines.
