The State Highway Administration’s (SHA) District 5 (Anne Arundel County) is currently recruiting for a Maintenance Contract Inspector (Transportation Engineering Technician IV). This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below. This is a position specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this vacancy or function only. You will need to reapply for any future recruitment conducted for this job classification.
Nature of Work: The Maintenance Contract Inspector performs duties in maintenance and construction work areas such as highways, ramps, buildings, parking areas, bridges and snow removal. This position oversees all aspects of work done by the contractors such as guardrail installation and repair; paving; highway lighting; herbicide spraying; tractor mowing; tree and brush cutting; inlet repairs; mechanical roadway sweeping; crack sealing; RPMs and line striping. The Maintenance Contract Inspector receives assignments from the Project Engineer and oversees work performed by skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled work teams. This position also ensures that all materials and equipment are used correctly and that the project is done in a timely manner according to the contracts special provision and Maryland’s specification and standards. Duties also include keeping work records on inspector daily reports and daily construction logs to be entered into the ledger book. This position will provide the basic level of professional experience to ensure that the daily maintenance operations in the district are carried out correctly, safely, and in compliance with standards and specifications. This position will be required to assist the District Operations Engineer with inspection of district maintenance contracts.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Five (5) years of experience in technical engineering related work in the areas of design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.
Selective Qualification: Two and a half (2.5) years of the required experience must have involved maintenance and/or construction inspection.
This statement contains a selective qualification, which is more focused in scope than the minimum qualifications for this classification. Selective qualifications are utilized when the position requires specific or additional bona fide occupational qualifications (i.e., knowledge, skill, or ability).
Notes:
Applicants may substitute education in a civil engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience, up to a maximum of three years.
Applicants who possess an associate's degree in either engineering, construction management or surveying or surveying technology from an accredited community college, college or university are considered to have met two years of the five-year experience requirement.
Licenses & Certifications
Candidate must possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland with less than (4) points.

Special Requirements:
This position will be on call 24/7 for highway emergencies and natural disasters and is considered essential personnel.
Employees in this class are considered essential and must be available for 24-hour emergency call up with a response time of less than one (1) hour.
Employees will serve a six-month probationary period with the possibility of probation being extended an additional six months.
Employee must obtain and maintain a valid State of Maryland Class B CDL.
